LATE STRIKE LIFTS MATADORS PAST MEN’S SOCCER

SACRAMENTO -- Visiting CSUN took advantage of playing a man-up late in the match on Wednesday afternoon, scoring a goal in the 84th minute to break a 1-1 deadlock and lift the Matadors to a 2-1 victory over host Sacramento State at Hornet Soccer Field.

The loss dropped the Hornets to 6-4-2 overall and 1-2 in Big West Conference play, while CSUN improved to 5-3-3 overall and 2-1 in league action with the win.

It took just over four minutes for the Matadors to grab the lead as Marley Edwards found the upper left-hand corner for his first goal of the season at the 4:17 mark and a 1-0 advantage.

Junior Austin Wehner provided his side's first solid chance at the 19 minute mark, unleashed a shot to the left post that was punched away from danger by goalkeeper Cooper Wenzel to maintain the shutout. Later, in the 35th minute, Cristo Cervantes had another opportunity turned away by Wenzel to the bottom right corner as time expired in the first half.

Wenzel had another stop on a Michael Gonzalez attempt in the 67th minute before the Hornets were able to come up with the equalizer in the 77th minute as Wehner cashed in a ball off the foot of Genaro Alfaro to tie the match at one apiece.

Cody Sundquist found Alfaro on the right side, who took a touch to create some space before lofting a ball to the left side of the six. There, Wehner out-jumped two Matador defenders and headed the ball back across the goal to the right post and in for his second goal of the season.

Sacramento State then went down a man in the 84th minute and CSUN took advantage seconds later as A.J. Johnson sent the ensuing free kick into the box where it cleared the head of Levin Gerhardt, but the ball caught his back foot in mid-air and redirected past the Hornet keeper at the top of the six for the go-ahead goal.

Wehner had another attempt smothered by Wenzel in the 87th minute and Sacramento State earned a last-gasp corner in the final 90 seconds, but couldn't get a shot off.

CSUN had an 11-8 advantage in shots with both teams putting five on frame. Wehner led the Hornets with three shots — all three on frame — while Michael Gonzalez had a pair of attempts. Sacramento State also held a 6-5 advantage in corners and the two teams combined for 33 shots and six total cards.

The Hornets return to action on Saturday night (Oct. 8) on the road back in Southern California, traveling to Orange County to take on UC Irvine at 7 p.m. at Anteater Stadium.
