STANFORD, Calif. -- The Sacramento State doubles team of
Mark Keki and
Mate Voros made an incredible run at the ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships, before narrowly falling in the championship match.
The duo, currently ranked as the 34th best doubles team in the country, beat the tournament's Nos. 2 and 4 seeds, and almost beat the No. 1 seed in the championship match. One of those victories for Keki/Voros came against the nation's 10th-ranked doubles team.
By virtue of reaching the Super Regional championship match, Keki/Voros receive an automatic berth to the ITA National Fall Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego (Nov. 2-6). The tandem will become the first Sacramento State doubles team to play at the national event, which features the top 32 doubles teams in the country.
The Super Regionals, which began on Saturday at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Center, featured the top 16 doubles teams from the Northwest Region. Keki/Voros won a pair of matches on Saturday, one on Sunday, and played the championship match this morning.
They started their run on Saturday in the Round of 16 with an 8-4 win over Stanford's Aryan Chaudhary and Sami Banerjee. Later that day, in the quarterfinals, they beat the nation's 10th ranked doubles team (No. 2 seed at the tourney) Sema Pankin/Eleftherios Neos of Portland, 8-5.
In the semifinals, Keki/Voros beat Cal's Ryder Jackson/Carl Emil Overbeck (No. 4 seed) by a 6-2, 5-7, 14-12 score. During that third set super tiebreaker, Keki/Voros saved a pair of match points before eventually winning.
That set up this morning's championship match against the nation's fifth ranked doubles team and No. 1 seed at the tourney, Quinn Vandecasteele and Joshua Charlton of Oregon. The teams split the first two sets, but Keki/Voros eventually fell, 6-2, 3-6, 10-8.
Both also competed in singles, where Keki went 1-1, and Voros 1-0. All results from both players can be found below.
