MEN’S TENNIS OPENS FALL SLATE WITH 19 WINS AT AGGIE INVITE; MAIOR/SILVA WIN DOUBLES TITLE

DAVIS, Calif. -- Sacramento State sent all 10 players to the Aggie Tennis Invitational, held over the weekend at the Marya Welch Tennis Center in Davis, and the Hornets combined for 19 wins between singles and doubles play. The highlight came from Jan Silva and Ori Maior who combined to win the top flight doubles championship.

The event marked the first of four fall tournaments in which the Hornets will compete.

Maior/Silva went 4-0 in the Blue Doubles Draw, defeating teams from Stanford, UC Davis and San Francisco. The duo had little trouble in both the semifinals and championship match, winning both by 8-3 scores. Silva also won the Aggie Invite doubles championship last season when he teamed with Mate Voros.

For Maior, the doubles title was the cap to a busy weekend of play for the senior. He combined to go 6-1 between singles and doubles play at the tournament, and played eight and a half hours on Saturday. Among his singles victories included wins over opponents from Santa Clara and UC Davis. That included a victory over the Broncos' Mann Shah, who was the No. 4 seed at the tourney. Maior nearly won his semifinal match, falling in three sets to the tournament's No. 2 seed Andrei Volgin of UC Davis (2-6, 7-6, 6-3)

Eight of the Hornets' 10 players won at least one singles match, and all five doubles teams won at least one match. That included Patrick Wong and Michael Gravel who lost in the championship of the Gold Draw. The tandem went 3-1. Gravel had an impressive singles victory over Santa Clara's Matthew Rodriguez, 6-4, 6-0.

The Hornets' nationally ranked doubles team of Mark Keki and Voros won their lone match of the tournament over a duo from Saint Mary's. Keki/Voros then departed for Tulsa to compete at this week's ITA All-American Championships.

All of Sacramento State's results from singles and doubles play can be found below. The Hornets will next compete as a team at the ITA Northwest Regionals in Berkeley on Oct. 6-10.
