WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HAS WIN STREAK COME TO END AFTER LATE THREE FROM WEBER STATE

OGDEN, Utah — The Sacramento State women's basketball team had its five-game winning streak snapped with a 79-76 setback at Weber State on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (9-10 overall, 5-5 Big Sky Conference) trailed by 12 with just under three minutes to play in the third quarter before rallying to take a 66-65 lead with 3:32 left in the game. Weber State (8-12, 4-7) chipped away at an eventual four-point deficit and then took the lead when Emma Torbert buried a three-pointer from the right wing to put the team up 77-76 with 19 seconds showing. Following a Hornet turnover, the team was forced to foul Torbert who made both of her free throws.

Weber State elected to foul Lianna Tillman on the inbounds pass on Sacramento State's final possession. Tillman's first free throw was missed and she was whistled for a lane violation while attempting to purposely miss the second ending the team's comeback hopes.

Torbert was the star for Weber State as she had a career high 29 points on 11-of-20 shooting. She made three three-pointers and was 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Torbert also added seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Tillman was Sacramento State's high scorer with 23 points and recorded her second double-double of the season with a career-high tying 10 assists. Isnelle Natabou posted her 11th double-double, and sixth in as many games, with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jazzy Carrasco was one off her season high with 14 points and Summer Menke provided 10 points to give the team four players in double figures.

Both teams started the game hot with Sacramento State claiming a 13-9 lead on a Tillman jumper with 4:21 left in the opening period.The Wildcats moved ahead behind a 9-0 run and took a 21-15 lead at the end of the period.

Weber State pushed its lead to 12 early in the second quarter and led by six (33-27) after Daryn Hickok's jumper with 3:56 left in the half. Sacramento State went on a 7-2 run which was capped by a three-pointer from Katie Peneueta to get back within one in just over two minutes of game time. However, the only points for either team in the final two minutes of the quarter came on a layup from Vicky Parra to give WSU a 37-34 advantage at halftime.

Weber State withstood every run from the Hornets in the third quarter and used an 8-0 spurt of its own to go ahead by 11 (50-39) with 5:20 remaining in the quarter. The lead grew to 12 (56-44) following a pair of free throws from Ava Williams with 2:54 showing. The Hornets closed the gap with two free throws from Tillman and a three-pointer from Carrasco. After the Wildcats made two free throws, Carrasco knocked down a second triple to make it 56-52 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Hornets' big push in the fourth started with a Carrasco jumper to cut the WSU lead to 62-57. Natabou followed with a layup to make it a one possession game. Hickok gave the Wildcats some breathing room with a jumper before Menke converted a fast-break layup and Peneueta tied the game at 64-64 with a three with 6:06 left.

Jadyn Mathews split a pair of free throws to swing the lead back to Weber State and neither team scored until Tillman's traditional three-point play put the Hornets on top 67-65 with 3:32 left. Mathews tied the game with baseline jumper before Carrasco made two free throws with 2:49 left.

The lead remained at two until Tillman scored to push the Hornet lead to 72-68 with 58 seconds left. Kori Pentzer answered with a quick score and WSU fouled Carrasco who made both free throw attempts. Torbert responded with two free throws of her own with 31 seconds remaining.

Following a timeout, Sacramento State advanced the ball to midcourt and was able to get it in the hands of Carrasco who made 1-of-2. With 29 seconds left and leading by three, the Hornets were whistled for a foul just one second into the Wildcat possession and Pentzer made both attempts to make it 75-74. Carrasco again split her two free throws after she was fouled leading to Torbert's go-ahead basket on the next possession.

Sacramento State shot 48.3 percent from the field, was 9-of-23 from three (.391) and 11-of-16 at the line (.688). The team had just seven turnovers in the game but was outrebounded 33-25, including 8-4 on the offensive glass.

The Hornets will next play at Northern Arizona on Thursday, Feb. 3, before hosting Portland State on Saturday, Feb. 5.
