Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. — Lianna Tillman scored a career high 29 points, Summer Menke added 15 points and Isnelle Natabou recorded her sixth double-double of the season to propel the Sacramento State women's basketball team to a 70-58 win at Portland State on Saturday afternoon at Viking Pavilion.
The Hornets improved to 5-9 overall and earned their first Big Sky Conference victory this season in five games. PSU, which was playing for the first time since Dec, 15, dropped to 5-6 overall and 0-3 in league games.
Tillman eclipsed her previous career best of 27 points with a solid performance which saw her make 9-of-18 field goals and 9-of-12 free throws. She also tacked on a career high seven rebounds and was one off her season best with eight assists.
Natabou hauled in a career best 22 rebounds to become the first Hornet to have 20 rebounds in a game since Kennedy Nicholas grabbed 20 against Southern Utah on Jan. 19, 2019. Her total ties her for the second most rebounds in a game in Sacramento State history, trailing only Kylie Kuhn's 23 against USF on Dec. 1, 2010 and matching Kellie Kuepler's mark against Saint Mary's on Dec. 6, 1996. Natabou''s total is also tied for the fourth best in all of NCAA Div. I women's basketball this season.
Natabou scored 14 points with 12 coming in the second half. The freshman made 5-of-6 shots in the final two quarters. She has now scored in 10 or more points in five consecutive games and seven of the last eight. During that stretch, she is averaging 15.8 points and 11.3 rebounds.
Menke completed the team's scorers in double digits as she made four field goals and was 6-of-7 from the line.
Both teams got off to a slow start as the Vikings led 10-9 following the first 10 minutes of action. The Hornets struggled protecting the ball in the early going, committing seven turnovers in the quarter.
Sacramento State settled down in the second quarter but found itself down by five, 30-25 at the break. The Hornets had just one turnover in the quarter but were 10-of-33 from the field and just 3-of-13 from three-point range.
Sacramento State retook the lead with a strong start in the third quarter. The Hornets made three of their first four shots and seven of their first 10 to take a 46-39 leads with just over three minutes remaining. However, the team missed its final three looks while PSU ended the half on an 8-1 run to pull within one, 48-47, at the end of the quarter.
The Hornets put the game out of reach by outscoring the Vikings, 22-11, in the fourth quarter. Sacramento State made 6-of-12 shots in the period and was 10-of-14 from the line. The team was aided by an 11-0 run during the middle of the quarter which saw Natabou score seven and Tillman four. The Vikings drew back within six, 62-56, with 2:32 remaining only to have the Hornets score eight unanswered comprised of a layup from Natabou and six free throws from Tillman.
Sacramento State made 23-of-57 shots (40.4 percent) during the game, was 7-of-24 from three (29.2) and 17-of-24 from the line (70.8). The team outrebounded PSU, 42-39, and finished with seven steals and four blocked shots. The Hornets also did a great job of limiting turnovers over the final three quarters, finishing the game with 11 total giveaways.
Portland State shot 34.4 percent from the field (21-61), was 4-of-16 from three (25.0) and 12-of-14 from the line (85.7). The team had a balanced scoring attack with Alaya Fitzgerald leading the team wtih 15 points and Savannah Dhaliwal, Esmeralda Morales and Jada Lewis each scoring 13. Lewis completed the double-double with 11 rebounds.
Sacramento State returns home for a three-game stretch of games at The Nest beginning on Thursday, Jan. 20 against Eastern Washington at 7 p.m.
