WOMEN'S SOCCER DROPS BIG SKY OPENER SUNDAY AT PORTLAND STATE

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. - Sacramento State scored two goals in Sunday's Big Sky Conference opener but was unable to keep pace with Portland State, falling 4-2 on the road.

With the loss, Sacramento State is now 1-6-2 overall and 0-1 to start Big Sky play. Portland State, meanwhile, improves to 3-5-0 overall and 1-0 in league action.

Sunday's match was a wild affair that featured six total goals. Portland State opened the scoring early, taking a 1-0 lead in the 5th minute. Unfazed, Sacramento State found the equalizer in the 23rd minute, an excellent score on a breakaway by Danna Restom. Restom made two opponents miss, including knocking one off her feet, before burying a shot in the lower left corner from the top of the 18. The goal was her second of the year.

The 1-1 score held through the rest of the first half before Portland State again went ahead, scoring in the 48th minute to take a 2-1 lead.

But the Hornets were ready with an answer, finding the equalizer just over a minute later. Senior midfielder Julia Herrera took a free kick for the Hornets from their own side of the field. She sent one perfectly over the Portland State backline as a charging Abigail Lopez broke past her defender into space to receive the kick. After making the keeper miss, Lopez sent home her team-leading third goal of the year to level the match, 2-2.

Far from finished, Portland State went ahead yet again on a stunning score by Abi Hoffman from more than 30 yards out. Hoffman was also responsible for each of Portland State's first two goals, giving her the hat trick in the league opener.

Unfortunately, Sacramento State was out of equalizers as the Hornets were unable to find another goal for the rest of the afternoon. Portland State added the dagger with a header off a corner kick in the 76th minute, making it a 4-2 match.

Sacramento State was outshot by the Vikings, 18-14, and made one fewer save, 5-4, in the loss. Portland State also dominated in corner kick attempts, leading the Hornets, 4-1, in that category.

Sunday's match was the first of three consecutive Big Sky matches on the road for Sacramento State. Up next for the Hornets, the team will head to Montana for a Friday, Oct. 1 contest against the Lady Griz. From there, the team heads east to Greely, Colo. to take on the Bears. on Sunday, Oct. 3.
