Box Score FRESNO, Calif. - Sacramento State was on the road Sunday, taking on a talented Fresno State squad on their home pitch. The Hornets jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the second half, but ultimately battled to a 1-1 draw on the road.
With the draw, Sacramento State is now 1-5-2 on the year. Fresno State moves to 2-3-2.
Playing their fifth match on the road over their last seven, the Hornets came out prepared to silence a Fresno State offense that scored five goals in its last match a week ago. They did just that for 45 minutes, limiting the Bulldogs to just five first half shots (three on goal). Sacramento State's offense kept pace with the Bulldogs, taking four shots of its own, placing two on goal.
It wasn't until the second half when Sacramento State found the back of the net first on an Aubrey Goodwill penalty kick in the 58th minute, Goodwill's first goal of the year. The converted penalty kick was the fifth of Goodwill's Sacramento State career, moving her even futher up atop the program's all-time penalty kick leader list.
Just moments before, it was Goodwill played a free kick from near midfield into the box where a collision took down two Sacramento State players. The foul was ultimately whistled against Fresno State's Jordan Lau and resulted in the penalty kick opportunity.
Sacramento State held on to its 1-0 lead for nearly 30 minutes, but Fresno State found the equalizer with just moments to spare, scoring on a Jaylyn Wright kick in the 89th minute.
Level at one, the Hornets and Bulldogs battled through two overtime periods without a score, sending the match final, 1-1.
For Sacramento State, the overtime match was its third this season and its 10th in its last 19 matches dating back to the start of the 2020 season. The Hornets are 2-2-6 in those 10 matches.
Sunday's match as the final non-conference event of the year for Sacramento State as the Hornets open Big Sky Conference play this next Sunday, Sept. 26 on the road at Portland State. The Hornets took both of the team's matches last season, also in Portland, and will look to open league action with a win there again. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the match will stream live online on ESPN+.
