BASEBALL TAKES GAME ONE, SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST NEW MEXICO STATE

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State opened a four-game series with the visiting New Mexico State Aggies with a Friday doubleheader at John Smith Field. After coming from behind to take game one, 10-5, the Hornets dropped game two, 10-2, to the Aggies.

For Sacramento State (19-7, 11-3 WAC), the games were the team's first since last Monday's 3-2 walk-off win over the Stanford Cardinal. New Mexico State (11-15, 9-6 WAC) entered play Friday riding a six-game losing streak.

That streak extended to seven as Sacramento State came from behind to win game one of Friday's twin-bill, 10-5.

Taking the mound for the Hornets in game one was ace Scott Randall (5-0). So reliable all season, Randall got off to a rough start Friday, giving up a season-high four runs in just his first three innings.

After laboring through the first three innings, Randall managed to right the ship, pitching his way through six innings. He threw a season-high 109 pitches (78 strikes), allowed four runs on seven hits and walked one while striking out 11.

For the season, Randall has struck out 52 in 44.0 innings. He's walked just three.

Although it took a few innings, the Hornets offense backed up their ace with more than enough runs in Friday's game one. The scoring started with a Ryan Walstad solo home run in the fourth inning, a massive shot that cleared the second wall in right-center. Not long later, Keith Torres smashed a game-tying three-run home run.

With the game tied at four, the Hornets took advantage of the New Mexico State bullpen, taking the lead on a Dawsen Bacho sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. Sacramento State added two more in the frame on an RBI groundout by Steven Moretto and an RBI single by Aaron Zeidman.

Sacramento State continued to add on, scoring three more in the sixth thanks to a two-run double off the bat of Bacho and an RBI knock by Dylan McPhillips.

New Mexico State added one more in the top of the seventh before Hornets closer Stone Churby shut the door to secure the seven-inning win.

The come-from-behind victory was Sacramento State's 10th such win this year. The four-run deficit was the second largest that the Hornets have overcome this season (trailed by five at Utah Valley, won 11-7).

Game two got off to a similar start as New Mexico State jumped on Hornets starter Eli Saul for two first-inning runs. Unlike game one, however, the scoring didn't stop.

The Aggies scored twice in the first, three times in the second, single runs in each third and fourth innings, two more in the fifth and their 10th and final run in the sixth inning.

Sacramento State needed three different pitchers to get through the first five innings. Saul (1-2) went 2.2 and was responsible for six of New Mexico State's 10 runs. He walked a season-high six while giving up seven hits.

Left-hander Rylan Tinsley went an inning and a third out of the bullpen, allowing a run, before Max Pettey tossed one more and gave up two.

Sophomore right-hander Wesley Harper finally managed to slow the rolling Aggies offense, allowing just one run on four hits over four innings of relief. He did not walk a batter and struck out four, lowering his ERA to 3.86 on the season.

While Sacramento State's offense found life late in game one, the same could not be said in game two as the team managed just two runs on seven hits.

Two of those hits came off the bat of outfielder Hunter Dorraugh, who entered the game in the sixth inning in left field. Dorraugh was 2-for-2 Friday and scored one of the team's two runs.

Steven Moretto hit his fifth home run of the season to put the Hornets on the board in the fifth inning and finished the game 1-for-2.

Friday's doubleheader split snapped an incredible win streak for Sacramento State. Entering play on Friday, the Hornets had won 16 straight doubleheader games, sweeping each of their last eight twin bills. The last time Sacramento State split a doubleheader was nearly two years ago to the date, April 12, 2019, at Seattle U.

Overall, since the start of the 2019 season, the Hornets are an incredible 24-2 in doubleheader games. Sacramento State has not been swept in a doubleheader since March 24, 2018 at the Pac-12's Utah.

The Hornets and Aggies will face off again tomorrow afternoon at 3 pm right back here at John Smith Field. As with all home games, tomorrow afternoon's contest will stream live online on the WAC Digital Network.
