WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS IN OVERTIME, 1-0, TO BIG SKY-LEADING MONTANA

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State took the undefeated Montana Griz to overtime Friday afternoon, but fell victim to a Griz golden goal in the 95th minute in a 1-0 loss.

Friday's match was the first of two between Sacramento State (1-3-4, 0-3-2 Big Sky) and Montana (6-0, 5-0 Big Sky). The two teams will face off again on Sunday, which is Senior Day at Hornet Field.

Sacramento State started out slow on Friday as Montana dominated possession for the first 25 minutes. But the Hornets settled in and started to apply pressure midway through the first half.

Despite tallying just one first half shot, Sacramento State had a number of good looks, nearly missing on a couple of crosses. The Montana defense, which leads the Big Sky in goals allowed and shutouts, also made a number of good plays to dance out of danger. After 45 minutes, the Griz had outshot Sacramento State, 7-1, though the Hornets seemed to take the momentum into the break.

The second half was more even in terms of possession, though it was Montana once again running up the shot count, outshooting the Hornets, 8-2. Four of those shots were on frame, but sophomore goalkeeper Katie Price, making her first start as a Hornet, proved up to the task, saving all four. She had two in the first half as well, giving her six in her Sacramento State debut.

The last one proved one too many for Price and the Hornets, however, as Montana's Avery Adams served a ball into the middle of the Sacramento State box, finding Sami Siems for the clean header over the charging Price and into the open net.

Despite the loss, Sacramento State played the undefeated Griz exceptionally well, overall. Friday's match was just the second time this season that Montana was forced into extra time and it was just the third time this season the Griz only scored one goal.

Jasmyne Dunn was the offensive spark for the Hornets on Friday, creating for herself and her teammates, despite not being able to turn those opportunities into scores. Dunn had one of two Hornets shots on goal. Defender Aubrey Goodwill had the other.

Christina Lazar had one of the best looks of the afternoon for Sacramento State, getting a head on a Goodwill corner kick but sending it just wide of the Montana goal.

Sacramento State nearly stole a last-second victory at the end of regulation, playing a corner with under 20 seconds remaining, but after a Hornets header, Montana managed to clear it just long enough to let the clock expire in regular time.

Friday's game was the first Sacramento State athletic event to feature fans in the stands, as well, as the department opened attendance for student-athlete friends and family and Sacramento State students up to 20% capacity.

Up next for the Hornets in Sunday's Senior Day and home finale. The Hornets will recognize their graduating seniors before kickoff. Sunday's match will start at 12 p.m. PT. and will stream live online on Pluto.TV.
