DOUBLE OVERTIME GOLDEN GOAL GIVES WOMEN'S SOCCER 2-1 WIN IN SEASON FINALE

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. – Sacramento State closed the 2020-21 regular season with a thrilling 2-1 win in double overtime Sunday afternoon at Portland State. The Hornets scored twice on penalty kicks, including the equalizer with just six minutes left in regulation.

With Sunday's win, Sacramento State ends the year with a 3-4-4 overall record, including a 2-4-2 mark in the Big Sky.

The Hornets and Vikings traded blows in a scoreless first half. Sacramento State dominated the stat sheet over the first 45, outshooting Portland State, 10-5, and leading in corner kicks, 3-1. Despite the Hornets' offensive pressure, Sacramento State was unable to find the back of the net before halftime.

After going scoreless in Friday's game one between the two teams, Portland State found the back of the net first on Sunday, scoring off a corner kick in the 63rd minute. After the corner ricocheted in the box for a moment, Portland State's Paige Donothan put a foot on the ball and snuck it just inside the left post for the score.

Sacramento State remained unfazed, however, and continued to apply pressure on the Vikings backline. While Portland State's defense remained sturdy, eventually that back line broke as Jasmyne Dunn raced toward the goal on the near side. Her defender went in for a hard tackle, tripping Dunn and drawing a foul inside the box for a penalty kick with just six minutes remaining in regulation.

Aubrey Goodwill, who converted on a penalty kick earlier this season at Idaho State, found success again on Sunday. Goodwill took the penalty kick and blew it right by the Vikings keeper for the late equalizer.

Even at one, Sacramento State fittingly found its way to overtime yet again in its final match of the season. After a scoreless first 10 minutes, the match headed to double overtime, the sixth such match for the Hornets.

Again, Sacramento State kept up the offensive pressure and again the Vikings defense broke down, again committing a foul inside their own 18. This time, the foul came against Tiffany Miras as the forward looked to track down a cross and was taken down from behind.

So for the second time on Sunday, Aubrey Goodwill lined up for the Sacramento State penalty kick, and again for the second time, she was successful, sending the Hornets home with the penalty kick golden goal.

Goodwill closes out the season as the team's point leader with eight points. She scored a team-leading three goals – all on penalty kicks – and recorded two assists, also a team-high.

As a team, Sacramento State finished the 2020-21 season with eight points, good for fourth in the Big Sky's competitive Northwest Division. Montana (8-1, 7-1 Big Sky) and Idaho (5-5, 5-3 Big Sky) will represent the division at the 2021 Big Sky Soccer Championship.

The 2020-21 season was full of ups and downs for Sacramento State. From the disappointment of the season's initial postponement to the excitement of February 11's season-opening overtime win in the rain, the 2020-21 campaign had it all.

Sacramento State started the season 1-0-4, extending its record-setting regular season unbeaten streak to an incredible 22 games, before the Hornets saw that streak finally end on the road in Idaho.

In total, the 22-match streak spanned 579 days from August 25, 2019 through March 26, 2021. The Hornets were 12-0-10 during the streak, including 8-0-5 at home and 5-0-6 against the Big Sky.

The 2020-21 season also marked the end of the careers for a number of impactful Hornets seniors. Skylar Littlefield, Aubrey Goodwill, Jessica Mann, Alyssa Baena, Christina Lazar, and Shantel Torres-Benito all played their final matches with Sacramento State on Sunday.

Despite the departures, Sacramento State is expected to return more than 20 players to its roster for next season, providing plenty of returning experience as the team looks to return to the Big Sky Soccer Championships in the fall of 2021.
