Box Score SACRAMENTO -- The Hornets used a 6-2 run to close the fifth set and hold off Eastern Washington in a hard fought 3-2 victory (25-14, 17-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-12) over the Eagles on Sunday afternoon at the Nest.
Coupled with yesterday's three-set sweep of the Eagles, Sacramento State swept the season series against Eastern Washington. In addition, the Hornets (7-5 overall, 7-5 Big Sky Conference) are now 6-0 at home this year, and 42-5 in home conference games dating back to 2015.
Sacramento State is also 2-0 on its season-long four-match homestand, which concludes next week for games vs. Portland State on Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.).
In the pivotal fifth set, Sacramento State jumped out to a 9-5 lead before the Eagles immediately responded with a 5-0 run to take a 10-9 lead. However, Sacramento State would close on a 6-2 run with the final point coming on a combo block from Sarah Falk and Caitlin Volkmann. During the spurt, the tandem of Volkmann/Falk had two combo blocks while Falk and Macey Hayden also added kills.
The Hornets won despite hitting just .141 while the Eagles hit .161. In addition, the Eagles had more digs (92-78) and blocks (12.0-10.0), while the Hornets had four more kills (54-50) and three more aces (8-5). One of those aces came in the fifth set from Michelle Taynton who racked up two points on her serve while Ashtin Olin accounted for four points on her serve during the fifth.
Freshman rightside hitter Caitlin Volkmann led all players with 12 kills to go along with three blocks. Fellow freshman rightside hitter Karlee Soderberg had a career-high 11 kills to go with three blocks. Senior Macey Hayden posted her fifth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs, and freshman outside Bridgette Smith had seven kills, 16 digs and four aces. Middle blocker Kalani Hayes added eight kills and a block, and Falk had five kills and a career-high tying seven blocks.
Defensively, Caty Cordano had a match-high 28 digs and raised her season average to 4.86 digs per set. Setter Ashtin Olin had 24 assists and 11 digs for her third double-double of the year, and McKenna Smith added 22 assists.
