Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Four freshman pitchers put together a solid performance on Thursday, but the Sacramento State offense managed just three hits in Thursday night's series-opening 5-0 loss at Santa Clara.
The loss snaps Sacramento State's four-game win streak as the team falls to 5-3 overall. Santa Clara has now won back-to-back games, both in shutout fashion, to improve to 3-5.
Keith Torres went 1-for-4 and Jorge Bojorquez finished 2-for-4 at the top of the Sacramento State lineup, accounting for all three of the team's hits on Thursday. The Hornets put two runners on in the eighth inning after Ryan Walstad walked after Bojorquez's second hit, but that was as close as the Hornets came to scoring in Thursday's contest.
On the mound, Sacramento State used four freshman pitchers, including Cole Tremain in his Sacramento State debut. The foursome combined to allow just three earned runs in an overall impressive performance.
Right-hander Noah Takacs got the start for Sacramento State, the first of his career. He threw 3.2 scoreless innings and allowed just four baserunners on three hits and a walk.
With two on and two out in the fourth, Takacs was replaced by Wesley Harper, another freshman. Harper needed just one pitch to get the final out of the inning, though did get some help on an excellent diving play by centerfielder Jack Bollengier to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.
Kevin Haynes was next, and although he was tagged with the loss, he pitched better than his final line would indicate. Haynes allowed four runs, though just two earned, in two innings. He gave up three hits and walked two while striking out one.
Santa Clara did most of its damage against Haynes, though had help in the fifth inning. A hit batter, a walk, and a pop up base hit that dropped between three Hornets in shallow right field turned into two unearned runs after a Keith Torres throwing error, the shortstop's first of the season.
Santa Clara tagged Haynes for two more in the sixth with another walk, a base hit, a sacrifice bunt, and another base hit.
Tremain was last on the mound for Sacramento State, throwing two innings in his collegiate debut. He allowed one run on a solo home run, struck out a pair, and did not walk any.
The scoreless outing was the first of the year for the Hornets, who came into Thursday night's action averaging nearly five runs per game.
Sacramento State won't have to wait long to get back in the win column as the Hornets and Santa Clara Broncos will be right back at it tomorrow from Stephen Schott Stadium in Santa Clara.
First pitch for Friday night's game is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the game will again stream live online on the WCC Sports Network. Direct links for video, live stats, and more can be found online on HornetSports.com.
