About Last Weekend
Sacramento State played its first baseball at
John Smith Field this last weekend (and then some), hosting a three-game series against Texas State before welcoming Pacific for a single Monday night contest. The Hornets won all four games, sweeping the Bobcats before coming from behind to beat the Tigers.
Against Texas State, the Hornets won both ends of a Saturday doubleheader, 8-5 and 5-4. They completed the sweep with a convincing 7-1 win in Sunday's game three. Following the three-game sweep, the Hornets hosted the Pacific Tigers on Monday. In a back-and-forth game, it was the Hornets who came out on top, riding a four-run seventh to come from behind to win, 8-5.
Sacramento State scored 28 runs in the four game stretch, including a season-high eight in two of them. On the mound, Hornets pitchers struck out 31 and allowed just 14 hits in the four games.
Receiving Votes
After starting the season 4-2 against #15 Arizona State and the Sun Belt West Division's preseason favorite Texas State, Sacramento State began receiving votes in two of the nation's top polls. The Hornets received votes in both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association
(NCBWA) poll and the
USA Today Baseball coaches poll. Both polls were released on Monday, March 1 and did not consider Sacramento State's Monday night win against Pacific.
Doyle is Your Hitter of the Week
Sophomore outfielder
Trevor Doyle was named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week following his performance in Sacramento State's three-game sweep of the Texas State Bobcats.
Doyle hit .500 in the series (5-10) with an on-base percentage of .583 and a .700 slugging percentage. He had two doubles, scored six runs, and drove in a pair in the three games. Defensively, he was perfect in the outfield, recording nine putouts in nine chances.
Hornets Hitters of the Week
Trevor Doyle's Hitter of the Week award was the first for Sacramento State in almost two years. Prior to Doyle, the last Hornet to earn Hitter of the Week honors was senior
Matt Smith, who received the award in April of the 2018 season.
Simard's Power Surge
Sophomore designated hitter/first baseman
Martin Vincelli-Simard has been on a tear here early in the 2021 season. Simard leads the Hornets and the Western Athletic Conference with an impressive 1.071 slugging percentage. He is tied for the conference lead with three home runs. Simard has 11 career home runs now, following a seven-home run freshman season and one in last year's abridged campaign.
Four in a Row
Sacramento State enters this weekend's four-game set against Santa Clara having won four straight games. The four-game streak is the team's longest winning streak since sweeping a four-game series against Milwaukee a year ago at home.
Offensive Production
Over the Hornets' last four games, the team has scored 28 runs on 33 hits, an impressive seven runs and 8.25 hits per game. Those numbers are a huge step forward from the team's first three games, a series on the road at #15 Arizona State, in which the team scored six total runs on 14 hits.
