Box Score MOSCOW, Idaho. – Sacramento State and the Idaho Vandals seemed destined for overtime on Friday, but a last minute Idaho goal handed Sacramento State it's first regular season loss in more than a year, 2-1, in Moscow.
Friday's match at Idaho was Sacramento State's (1-1-4, 0-1-2 Big Sky) first Big Sky contest on the road. Despite finding a second-half equalizer and pushing for another overtime match, a late break away by the Vandals (3-4-0, 3-2-0) proved the difference in the 2-1 final.
Idaho scored its first goal of the night on a penalty kick after freshman defender Shylah Soon was carded for a hard tackle just inside the Sacramento State box. The yellow was the second for Soon, who has played 578 minutes this season, third most on the team.
Idaho's Margo Schoesler took the penalty kick for the Vandals. Although Hornets goalkeeper Aaliyah Fesili guessed correctly, the ball skipped just beyond the outstretched hands of the diving keeper and into the back of the net for the night's first goal in the 57th minute.
Just 10 minutes later, Idaho returned the favor, drawing a card against the Hornets inside the box. Samantha Craig had her defender beat and was looking at an open shot, but the falling Idaho defender reached out to trip Craig, earning a yellow card and giving the Hornets a penalty kick.
Aubrey Goodwill took the kick for Sacramento State. The Hornets' veteran defender caught Idaho's keeper leaning and sent the ball uncontested into the bottom right corner for the equalizer in the 67th minute.
The two teams remained locked at 1-1 for 22 minutes, despite a number of opportunities for both squads. Jasmyne Dunn had an especially good look for the Hornets, taking an uncontested shot on goal but sending the ball just wide to the right, harmlessly out of play for the Vandals.
Idaho finally converted on one of its chances with just 90 seconds left to play. A through ball from the Idaho midfield found Myah Merino racing down the near side, step for step with Soon at her side.
As Fesili closed on the duo, Merino got a left foot on the ball and snuck it perfectly through the pair of Hornets and into the open net with just 81 seconds left in regulation.
Friday night's loss is Sacramento State's first regular season loss since August 23 of the 2019 season. After that season-opening loss, the Hornets put together a 17-match unbeaten streak before falling in the semifinals of the Big Sky Tournament. The Hornets started the 2021 spring season 1-0-4, extending that regular season streak to 22 matches before Friday's result.
Sacramento State matched Idaho in total shots on Friday, taking a season-high 14. They placed seven of those 14 shots on goal, another season high.
The Hornets will not have to wait long for a chance to avenge Friday night's loss. Sacramento State and Idaho will face off again on Sunday, March 28 at 12 noon in Moscow.
