BASEBALL DOMINATES ON THE MOUND AND AT THE PLATE, SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER AT TARLETON

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Sacramento State was in control of all 14 innings of Friday's doubleheader on the road at Tarleton State. The Hornets were excellent on the mound and at the plate as they swept the twin bill, 6-0 (7 innings) in game one, and 17-3 (7 innings) in game two.

Sacramento State (9-4, 2-0 WAC) was on the road for its Western Athletic Conference opener, taking the field in Stephenville, Texas for the first time in program history against the Tarleton Texans (6-10, 0-2 WAC).

2021 is the Texans' first year in the Western Athletic Conference and Friday's doubleheader was the program's first experience against a WAC opponent. With the doubleheader sweep, the Hornets start conference 2-0 while the Texans are 0-2.

Sacramento State starter Scott Randall was dominant in Friday's game one, tossing a complete game, seven-inning shutout. He allowed just two hits, walked one, and struck out seven. Randall earned his second win of the season and is now 2-0 with a minuscule 1.50 ERA.

The right-hander set the tone early, striking out each of the first two batters he faced and retiring 10 straight to start the game. It wasn't until the fourth inning that an errant hit by pitch gave Tarleton its first base runner.

It was two innings later still before the Texans finally managed a hit against the Hornets' ace, a base hit up the middle. Randall would allow another in the seventh, but neither passed second base in the game.

Randall received more offense that he needed as the Hornets scored six times in game one en route to a 6-0 shutout win. Dawsen Bacho hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth inning, to start the scoring. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Jack Bollengier gave the Hornets their second run of the inning.

Sacramento State scored four times in the fifth inning, including the first home run of the year for senior Matt Smith, a screaming line drive shot down the line in left. Another sacrifice fly, an RBI-double, and a Texan error turned into three more runs, giving Sacramento State its six for the afternoon.

As the first game of a conference doubleheader, Friday's first game was a scheduled seven-inning contest.

Although it was not scheduled as such, game two turned into a seven-inning contest as the Hornets 10-run-ruled the Texans, crushing their way to a 17-3 win over Tarleton State.

The Hornets jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but by the end of the third, were way out in front, 14-1, on top of the Texans. Sacramento State followed its two-run first inning with six runs in each of the second and third frames.

Jorge Bojorquez's two-run blast started the second-inning scoring, his second home run of the season, and Dylan McPhillips drove in a pair with his second double of the game. Steven Moretto also drove in two, capping the scoring in the inning.

In the third, Ryan Walstad doubled home a run before scoring on a Trevor Doyle base hit. Moretto knocked in another with a hit before Keith Torres cleared the bases with a towering three-run home run to straight away center field, his first of the season.

Sacramento State scored another in each the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, including a seventh-inning RBI for Nick Iwasa, who picked up his first hit and RBI of the season.

Seven different Hornets had an RBI in game two and it was McPhillips, Moretto, and Torres leading the way with three each. Moretto, who also had an RBI in game one, led the Hornets with four total on Friday.

The 17 runs were Sacramento State's most in a game since scoring 21 on the road at Cal Baptist in a 21-10 win on March 29, 2019.

17 runs were more than enough for reigning WAC Pitcher of the Week, Travis Adams, who, though not as dominant as he was in his previous outing, was excellent on the road against the Texas. Like Randall, Adams threw a complete seven-inning game, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks. Adams struck out a career-high eight in the outing.

After a first-inning run, Adams held the Texans scoreless through the fifth inning before serving up back-to-back solo home runs in the sixth. He bounced back with a scoreless seventh to close out the game.

Between the two games, Sacramento State scored 23 runs on 24 hits and committed one error. The Texans scored just three runs on 10 hits while committing five errors, including four in game two's rout.
