Box Score FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Sacramento State and Northern Arizona went into halftime Thursday night in Flagstaff separated by just three points. After the break, however, the Lumberjacks dominated the second half, outscoring the Hornets 48-27, and handing the Hornets a 75-51 loss.
With the loss, Sacramento State falls to 1-13 overall and 1-10 in Big Sky competition, The Lumberjacks improved to 8-9 overall and 6-7 in league.
Neither team got off to an exceptionally strong start, combining to make just eight baskets, 8-for-31, in the first half. Led by early scoring by junior Tiana Johnson, the Hornets led 12-9 after 10 minutes. Sacramento State and Northern Arizona picked up the pace a bit in the second quarter, trading leads three times in the period. As the teams went to half, the Hornets now trailed by three, 27-24.
In the first half, neither the Hornets or the Lumberjacks found much success offensively, shooting a combined 30% over the first 20 minutes. All of that changed for Northern Arizona in the second half as the Lumberjacks went on to score 48 second-half points on 63% shooting to pull away from the Hornets for good.
Sacramento State had a strong showing in the third quarter, scoring 20 points on 53% shooting, but the Lumberjacks were better, especially point guard Regan Schenck, who finished with a triple-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists. She was backed by guard Emily Rodabaugh. The Big Sky's three-point shooting leader, Rodabaugh was stifled by the Hornets in the first half but went on to make 5-of-9 three-point attempts in the second half.
The opposite was true for the Hornets, who struggled again from distance, shooting a season-low 14.3% (4-28) from three-point range. Milee Enger was responsible for two of those four made triples, with Summer Menke and Jordan Olivares each adding another.
Overall, Sacramento State shot 30.9% compared to Northern Arizona's 49.2%. The biggest difference came from distance, where the Lumberjacks shot 46.4% compared to the Hornets' 14.3%.
Despite the shooting woes from three-point range, Tiana Johnson found success in the paint for Sacramento State, scoring a game-high 19 points on an efficient 8-of-12 shooting and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. The junior guard added six rebounds to her line.
Sarah Abney led the team in rebounds, pulling in seven, matching her career high. She also led the Hornets on Thursday with three assists while adding four points.
Summer Menke kept her double-digit scoring streak alive with 12 points on 5-of-12 shooting. The Scottsdale native has now scored 10 or more points in 13 straight games. One of the team's best free throw shooters, Menke struggled at the line on Thursday, making just one of her four attempts.
