Box Score OGDEN, Utah – Sacramento State's Jordan Olivares finished with a career-high 22 points Thursday night at Weber State, but a tough third quarter proved costly for the Hornets as the team fell, 79-73, in Ogden.
With the loss, Sacramento State is now 2-18 overall and 2-15 in Big Sky competition. The win was the first of the year for Weber State as the team improved to 1-17 overall and 1-14 in league play.
Sophomore guard Jordan Olivares did most of the heavy lifting for Sacramento State on Thursday night, scoring a career-high 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting overall. Olivares was a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and went 5-for-7 at the free throw line. Her 22 points passed her previous career-high of 16 points, set earlier this season against San Francisco.
Olivares added four rebounds, three assists, and two steals to her final line.
Unfortunately, early foul trouble began to play a role for the Hornets in the third quarter. Both Olivares and Summer Menke picked up their fourth fouls in the third quarter, forcing them to the bench. The pair eventually fouled out in the fourth quarter after palying just 24 and 23 minutes, respectively. The third-quarter foul issues were compounded by six third-quarter turnovers as Weber State outscored the Hornets, 26-11 in the third period.
After leading for more than 29 minutes, Sacramento State gave up the lead for the first time with just over 30 seconds left in the third quarter.
From there the two teams battled back and forth before Weber State pulled away late, outscoring the Hornets 6-0 in the final minute to seal the 79-73 win.
Tiana Johnson collected her fourth double-double of the season in the loss, scoring 10 points and pulling in 10 rebounds. Weber State did a good job taking Summer Menke, the Hornets' leading scorer, out of the game, limiting the junior to just seven points on 2-for-9 shooting.
Sacramento State had a strong three-point shooting performance, making a season-high 12 triples. Junior guard Sarah Abney accounted for nearly half of those threes, going 5-for-11 from beyond the arc.
In total, Weber State outshot the Hornets, 43.6% to 35.3%. Free throws played a major role in the loss for Sacramento State, as well. The Wildcats made 25-of-27 total attempts from the free throw line while the Hornets were just 13-of-19.
