Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State tipped things off early Saturday, taking on the Northern Colorado Bears on the road in Greeley, Colo. The Hornets dropped the weekend matinee to the Bears, 90-67.
With the loss, Sacramento State is now 1-16 overall on the season, including 1-13 against the Big Sky. The Bears are now 9-11 overall and move just above .500, 9-8, in league play.
Sacramento State led just briefly on Saturday, going ahead 3-2 in the game's opening seconds on a Sarah Abney three-pointer. Unfortunately, that was the only lead of the day for the Hornets. The Bears went ahead, 8-5, just moments later and led for the rest of the game.
The first quarter remained close, though Sacramento State went into the first beak down five, 21-16. The second quarter is where things began to unravel for the Hornets, as they were outscored 28-10 in the second period.
Both teams scored 41 points in the second half, a strong showing on both sides of the ball, but the damage was already done as Sacramento State fell in Greeley, 90-67.
Abney was one of four Hornets to finish in double figures on Saturday, scoring 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting. She was 3-for-6 from beyond the arc and made her one and only free throw attempt. Her three made three-pointers were tied for most in the game.
Abney was matched by Summer Menke, who also finished with three made triples. Menke scored 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including a 3-for-4 day from distance. Menke finished with a team-high seven rebounds and team-leading two assists.
Jordan Olivares matched Menke's 13 points on 6-for-10 shooting and Tiana Johnson finished with 11 points, rounding out Sacramento State's scoring leaders.
Sacramento State found itself in foul-trouble on Saturday, as well, with both Menke and Milee Enger fouling out of the game. The Bears turned the Hornets' 22 fouls into 22 points, going 22-for-26 from the free throw line.
Overall, Sacramento State shot 40.0% overall, a respectable showing, though not enough compared to Northern Colorado's 55.4%. The Hornets also made 11 three-pointers, matching their season-high.
Sacramento State will return home for its next contests, back-to-back home games against the visiting Southern Utah Thunderbirds. The two teams start a Thursday-Saturday series in the Nest on Feb. 18. Both games will stream live online on Pluto.TV.
