Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State overcame an 18-point third quarter deficit, rallying in front of a packed house in The Nest to defeat the visiting San Jose State Spartans, 75-65, on Sunday. First year head coach Mark Campbell earned his first career win as a head coach with the victory.

Sacramento State improves to 1-1 overall while the Spartans fall to 1-2 on the young season.

The Hornets, who trailed by 18 points with just over two minutes remaining in the third quarter, dominated the Spartans in the final period. A combination of lock down defense and excellent shooting sent Sacramento State on an incredible 24-2 run over the final eight minutes of the game. What started as a 12 point deficit turned into 10 point lead as the Hornets came from behind to win at home.

Sacramento State got a game-high 20 points from center Isnelle Natabou, who added a team-leading 12 rebounds to collect her first career double-double. Both were career-highs for the first year player, who finished 9-for-13 overall from the floor.

Lianna Tillman added 19 while dishing out five assists, and Jazzy Carrasco scored 15 while adding five rebounds and four assists. Carrasco was also perfect from the free throw line, making all four of her attempts in the final minute of the game.

The trio combined to score 54 of the team's 75 points.

For Campbell, his first career win as head coach couldn't have come in more exciting fashion. In front of a packed crowd of over 900 fans, the Hornets stormed back to defend The Nest and secure Campbell his first win as a head coach.

"It's thrilling, it's exhausting, it's fun, its kind of all of the emotions," said Campbell after the game. "I'm just so proud of this group and this staff.

"There's just so much that's poured into trying to give your program a chance to win a game like this and we got rewarded for all of our hard work."

The Hornets and San Jose State went back and forth in the first half, trading leads six times in the first two periods. Sacramento State led by as much as six before heading into the half with a two point lead, 33-31.

San Jose State came out of the break on fire, going on a 9-0 run to start the period en route to a 27-point third quarter. The Spartans went up by as much as 18, 58-40, before Sacramento State began to claw their way back.

The Hornets returned the favor in the fourth quarter, however, dominating the Spartans on the defensive end and holding the visiting team to just seven points while scoring 30 of their own.

Natabou, who led all players with 20 points, scored eight in the fourth quarter, more than the entire San Jose State team combined. Tillman and Carrasco each added seven in the 30-point period.

Overall, Sacramento State outshot the Spartans, 43.8% (28-64) to 36.6% (26-71). For the second straight game, the Hornets outrebounded their opponent, beating the Spartans in that category, 44-41.
