Box Score SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- Utah held Sacramento State to 31 percent shooting, and had a massive 58-29 advantage in the rebounding department, as the Utes defeated the Hornets, 89-56, on Saturday evening at the Huntsman Center.
The loss dropped Sacramento State to 1-1 on the young season. The Hornets were playing their first road game after beating William Jessup at home in the season opener by 30 points. Today marked the first of two road games Sacramento State will play over a three-day stretch, which includes a matchup with Cal Poly on Monday at 7 p.m.
The Utes, a member of the Pac-12 Conference, improved to 2-0 on the young season. Utah is the first of three Pac-12 schools the Hornets will play, including Nov. 27 at Arizona and Dec. 11 against Oregon State.
Utah didn't shoot great (45% FG, 30% 3FG), but the Utes dominated the rebounding department. Of the 58 Ute rebounds, a whopping 19 came on the offensive glass which were converted into 21 second chance points. Only three Hornets pulled more than two rebounds (Cameron Wilbon 6, Bryce Fowler 5, Marcus Greene 4), and the Utes also had 40 points in the paint, and 40 points off their bench.
Sacramento State shot 31% (20-64) from the field, 18% (4-22) from the 3-point line and 80% (12-15) from the free throw line. The Hornets had only eight turnovers, but were credited for just five assists.
The biggest stretch of the game occurred late in the first half when Utah used a 9-0 run over the final two minutes to stretch a six-point lead all the way to a 45-30 advantage at halftime. Sacramento State would get no closer the rest of the way as Utah's 33-point margin of victory was also its largest lead of the evening.
For the Hornets, Fowler led the way with 12 points and five rebounds. Wilbon posted nine points and six rebounds, and true freshman Akili Evans had eight points.
Nine different Hornets scored points, including Chris Holley, Hugo Clarkin, William FitzPatrick and Zach Chappell who each had six. FitzPatrick's six points came on a pair of 3-pointers, and Chappell added a team-high three assists. Greene had two points to go with his four boards, Teiano Hardee posted two steals, and Jonathan Komagum three blocks.
For Utah, Branden Calrson had 21 points, and Marco Anthony had six points, 16 rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots.
