Box Score NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Sacramento State created a number of spectacular opportunities in overtime on Wednesday, but the Hornets were unable to find the game-winner, instead settling for a 2-2 draw on the road at CSUN.
With Wednesday night's draw, Sacramento State remains unbeaten in Big West play moving to 1-0-2. The Hornets are 3-6-3 overall. CSUN is now 1-10-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference.
In overtime on Wednesday, it was all Sacramento State as the Hornets took five shots in the 20 minutes while preventing the Matadors from taking any. Three of those shots were exceptional opportunities, but Sacramento State was unable to convert in the extra time.
Just a minute into the first extra period, Titus Washington had a good shot from 15 yards out blocked by a defender. The ball cleared traffic in front of the goal, but a last-second kick managed to change the ball's direction just enough to fly wide of the goal.
Moments later, on another push by the Hornets, Francisco Magana headed a brilliant cross from Genaro Alfaro for what looked like a sure goal. Magana headed the ball towards the lower left corner while the CSUN keeper watched helplessly from the right corner. Unfortunately, the ball, diving toward the ground, caught just enough of a defenders foot and deflected back into the field of play.
With just seconds remaining in the second overtime period, it was Washington again, receiving a strong cross from Tyler Moss right in front of the net. Looking to tip the ball off its path and into the net, Washington got just a bit too much of it, sending the ball just over the cross bar and out of play as time expired.
Prior to all of Wednesday's overtime dramatics, Sacramento State saw two brilliant goals from Zack Mason and Alfaro.
For Mason, his goal, a spectacular score from 30 yards out, came off a CSUN goalkeeper deflection. David Preys made a nice sliding block on a Washington shot, but the deflection carried clear out of the box to an open Mason. With space, the midfielder fired off an arcing shot that sailed into the top left corner, out of reach of Preys and into the back of the net to put the Hornets ahead, 1-0 in the 49th minute.
The goal was the first of Mason's career.
CSUN wasn't long to answer, however, netting the equalizer early in the 58th.
Despite the level score, the Hornets again pulled ahead, this time off the boot of Alfaro. After a booming goal kick from Ryan Curtis sailed all the way to his counterpart, Preys, pressure from Christo Cervantes forced a costly error by the CSUN keeper, putting him out of position and leaving Cervantes free to find a charging Alfaro. With space, Alfaro drilled a shot past the lone Matadors defender for his second goal of the season.
Unfortunately, CSUN was even quicker to answer this time, scoring on a fast break just 30 seconds later to again level the score.
From there, the teams traded possesions, though Sacramento State dominated the Matadors half of the field. Despite the extra possession and the advantages in shots, the Hornets were unable to find the game-winner Wednesday in Northridge.
In total, Sacramento State outshot the Matadors, 20-13, including 10-6 in shots on goal, and earned 10 corner kicks to CSUN's one. Curtis made four saves while facing 13 total shots while Preys made eight against 20 total shots.
