Box Score GREELEY, Colo. - Sacramento State closed out its longest road trip of the year with a tough, 2-0 loss Sunday morning at Northern Colorado.
The loss drops Sacramento State to 1-8-2 overall, including 0-3 in Big Sky play. Northern Colorado remains unbeaten in league play, improving to 4-0 in league and 6-6-2 overall.
Despite their opposite conference records, the Hornets and Northern Colorado looked evenly matched through the first 45 minutes. Although the Bears led in shots, 5-4, it was the Hornets with the match's only shot on goal, 1-0. It was Jasmyne Dunn who first challenged the Bears keeper in the 19th minute.
Sacramento State looked to be the aggressor, consistently pressuring the Northern Colorado backline in the first half. Unfortunately, that pressure was did not result in a goal as the two teams went into the break scoreless.
The second half was a different story, however, as Northern Colorado came out of the locker room and looked every part of a team that is unbeaten in league play.
The Bears fired off 15 second half shots compared to Sacramento State's four. Just three minutes into the second half, the Bears broke the scoreless tie, finding the back of the net on a long score from outside the box. Katie Price leapt high and to the corner, but the ball sailed over her outstretched arms and into the top left corner of the goal.
Sacramento State rallied in search of an equalizer, but despite good possessions, managed just one good look on goal in the final 45 minutes. It was Shay Valenzano firing off a shot in the 81st minute for the Hornets, but again was denied by the Bears' keeper.
Trailing 1-0, the dagger came in the 87th minute when Nthe Big Sky Conference's leading scorer, Lexi Pulley, found the back of the net to make it a 2-0 match.
In total, Sacramento State was outshot by the Bears, 20-8, including 8-2 in shots on goal. Northern Colorado had seven corners compared to the Hornets' two, and drew fewer fouls, just eight against Sacramento State's 15.
Price faced 20 shots while Northern Colorado's Ashley Franza faced just eight. Dunn and Valenzano each had one shot on goal for Sacramento State, though Ele Avery, Samantha Craig, and Julia Herrera led the team with two shot attempts each.
Sunday's match at UNC marks the end of a four-game stretch on the road for Sacramento State. The Hornets will finally return home to take on Idaho on Friday, Oct. 8 at Hornet Field. The match is first of two weekend contests at home, as Sacramento State also hosts Eastern Washington on Sunday, Oct. 10.
