A win on Sunday and the Hornets are in. A draw or a loss and the team will need some help from around the league.
Sacramento State looked to have that tournament-clinching win locked up on Friday, taking an early 1-0 advantage on Danna Restom's third goal of the season. After a penalty against NAU resulted in a free kick from just outside the box, Aubrey Goodwill fired the ball toward goal. NAU's keeper managed to block it, but right to the waiting Restom who shot it in for the early 1-0 lead.
The goal was Restom's third of the season, tied for second most on the team.
20 minutes later, however, Northern Arizona found the first of two equalizer, leveling the score on a quick counter and breakaway in the 33rd minute.
The Hornets were quick to answer however, as Ele Avery put her team back up by one just thre minutes later in the 36th minute. After a great forward pass from Jasymne Dunn, Avery went one-on-one with NAU's keeper, Natalie Manzo. After drawing the keeper off her line, Avery managed to deflect the ball off and around the sliding Manzo and send it skipping into an open net.
The goal was number four of the year for Avery, moving her a tie with fellow newcomer Abigail Lopez for the team lead in goals scored.
While the Hornets appeared to have all of the momentum heading into half time, Northern Arizona emerged from the break a newly energized team, immediately and consistently applying pressure to the Hornets defense. That pressure paid off in the 58th minute with the Lumberjacks for their second equalizer of the afternoon.
The rest of regulation was quiet, while, despite plenty of opportunities, neither team was able to score.
In the first overtime period, Sacramento State looked like it might have the game-winner in hand as Dunn drew Manzo well off her line and caused her to lost her feet. Looking to capitalize on the open net from a tough angle, Dunn's shot went wide and out of play for a Lumberjacks goalkick.
Finally, NAU broke the drought, finding the game-winner in the 103 minute off the boot of Rylee Mitchell.
The two teams combined to score five goals on a massive 40 shots. 23 of those shots belonged to Northern Arizona while Sacramento State attempted 17. NAU also led in shots on goal, 9-7.
The overtime match was Sacramento State's fourth of the year and its first in Big Sky action.
