LATE PORTLAND STATE RUN STINGS WOMEN'S HOOPS IN SATURDAY LOSS IN THE NEST

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State and Portland State went back and forth for most of Saturday's matinee matchup, but a late Vikings run proved costly for the Hornets in a 74-64 home loss.

With the loss, Sacramento State is now 0-7 to start the season, including 0-4 in Big Sky play. Portland State improved to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in conference.

Sacramento State jumped out to the game's first lead, going ahead 4-0 quickly before Portland State found its footing. The two teams stayed close throughout the firsttwo quarters, with neither team leading by more than six points until the final moments of the first half. Portland State closed the period on a 7-2 run to take a 37-30 lead into the break.

The third quarter was more of the same as the teams traded buckets fairly evenly. After trailing or being tied for most of the first half, Sacramento State recaptured the lead with three minutes left in the third. A Summer Menke steal and fast break layup evened the score, 46-46. Jazzy Carrasco put the Hornets ahead, 49-46, with a three following another Vikings turnover. The triple capped a 6-0 run for Sacramento State, its best of the afternoon.

The fourth quarter was where things really turned for the Hornets as the Vikings went on a 11-0 run to put the game out of reach. After a Milee Enger three put the team within one, 57-56, Portland State ripped off 11 straight points over a three-minute stretch, putting the game out of reach for Sacramento State.

In total, Portland State led for nearly 35 minutes, though the game was always within reach until the final few minutes of action. The two teams traded leads three times and were tied twice.

Summer Menke, who's steal, and layup tied the game in the third quarter, finished with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 showing from beyond the arc. The junior guard from Scottsdale also added 11 rebounds, another game-high, for her third double-double of the season.

She did a little bit of everything on Saturday, also blocking three shots while picking up four assists. Though seven games, Menke is averaging 14.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per game while shooting 43.2% (35.0% from three).

Tiana Johnson had 13 points and added eight rebounds for the Hornets, while Sarah Abney also cracked double digits, scoring 10.

Milee Enger had five assists for Sacramento State, the most in a game by a Hornet this year. As a team, the Hornets reached 15 total assists, their most in a game this season.

One of the biggest differences in Saturday's game came in the paint where the Vikings outscored the Hornets, 4-24. Both teams had eight second chance points, though Sacramento State had more offensive rebounds, 12-11 (the Hornets lost the rebound battle overall, 42-31).

Saturday's game was the last against the Vikings this year for the Hornets, who next turn their attention to the visiting Idaho State Bengals. Sacramento State will host the Bengals in the Nest on Thursday, Jan. 14 and Saturday, Jan. 16.
