VOLLEYBALL VICTORIOUS IN HOME OPENER, BEATS IDAHO STATE, 3-0

SACRAMENTO -- True freshmen outside hitters Bridgette Smith (17 kills, .359 hit%) and Caitlin Volkmann (12 kills, .375 hit%) combined for 29 kills and a .365 hitting percentage to help Sacramento to a three-set sweep (25-18, 27-25, 25-21) of Idaho State on Saturday evening at the Nest.

The Hornets limited Idaho State to a .150 hitting percentage while tallying 16 more kills (48-32) than the Bengals. In addition, Sacramento State had 60 digs, nine aces and 10.0 team blocks. Sacramento State closed sets impressively, finishing the second on a 5-1 run and the third on a 7-0 run. In fact, in that second set, the Hornets, who trailed, 24-22, saved three set points.

Today's match served as the home opener for Sacramento State, and these same two teams will play again tomorrow at 1 p.m. inside the Nest.

The victory pushed the Hornets' record to 2-1 overall, and 2-1 in the Big Sky. All 16 of the Hornets' regular season matches will take place against conference competition. The win was the second straight for Sacramento State after knocking off Northern Arizona in Flagstaff on Monday.

The loss dropped Idaho State to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in league play. The Bengals opened their season last week by splitting two matches at home vs. Montana. Sacramento State has now won nine of last 11 meetings between the two teams, including six straight at home. Overall, the Hornets are 36-15 all-time against Idaho State.

For the second time this season, the top four Hornets in kills were all freshmen. Smith had 17 kills with just three errors in 39 attacks to go with eight digs, two blocks and a pair of aces. Volkmann, who along with Smith is a true freshman, had 12 kills with just three errors in 24 attacks. Redshirt freshmen Kalani Hayes and Karlee Soderberg both had six kills and five blocks.

A pair of Hornets posted double figures in digs including libero Caty Cordano (16) and outside hitter Macey Hayden (10). Sacramento State has run a 6-2 offense in every match this year, and setters Ashtin Olin (19 assists, eight digs, two aces) and McKenna Smith (18 assists, five digs, two aces) both played well. Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin and Sarah Falk both had two blocks, and Paige Calvin a pair of digs.

No Idaho State player finished with double digits in kills.

Sacramento State returns to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. when it squares off with Idaho State for the second straight day. After tomorrow's match, the Hornets will be on the road next Sunday and Monday at Northern Colorado.
