Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State scored five runs in the fifth inning on Saturday, fueling a come-from-behind, 6-3 win against Santa Clara. The win was also head coach Reggie Christiansen's 300th with Sacramento State.
Sacramento State (6-4) had just three hits against Santa Clara (8-4) and trailed 1-0 heading into the fifth inning on Saturday, but the Hornets opened things up in a big way in the frame.
The inning started with a Keith Torres walk - a walk with which the junior extended his reached-base streak to nine games. Jorge Bojorquez followed with a base hit to right before Ryan Walstad also walked, loading the bases with nobody out.
With Matt Smith at the plate, Santa Clara's Brandon Buckley threw back-to-back wild pitches, allowing both Torres and Bojorquez to score, giving the Hornets a 2-1 lead.
Sacramento State loaded the bases again, taking advantage of another walk and a Santa Clara error, before Dylan McPhillips – making his first start of the season - delivered an RBI-single to left. Trevor Doyle closed out the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly to deep center field.
The RBI was one of two for Doyle on Saturday. The sophomore was busy for Sacramento State, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and six putouts in centerfield. One of those was an excellent diving grab while another was a running catch deep in the left-center gap
Sacramento State added another run in the eighth after Doyle singled home Steven Moretto from third.
In total, Sacramento State scored six runs on nine hits Saturday. In addition to Doyle, Bojorquez and Smith also had two hits. All six runs were scored by a different player.
On the mound, Scott Randall (2-0) delivered another exceptional start, allowing just one earned run over six innings of work. The junior right-hander allowed five hits, walked one, and struck out five en route to his second win of the year.
Randall managed to dance around some trouble early one as the Broncos put runners on in every inning, including runners in scoring position in the first, second, and fourth innings. They scored their only run against Randall in the fifth with a sacrifice fly.
For the season, Randall owns an excellent 0.95 ERA and an 8:1 K:BB ratio.
Stone Churby collected his first save of the season with two scoreless innings, striking out two and facing just one over the minimum.
Saturday's win was also one for the record books as Sacramento State head coach Reggie Christiansen won his 300th game at Sacramento State. Christiansen has won at least 30 games in each of the last eight seasons, including 40 in both 2014 and 2019. He is 300-254 with the Hornets.
Last year, Christiansen won his 400th game overall as a head coach when the Hornets defeated Grand Canyon to clinch the WAC Tournament championship.
The Hornets will have a chance to split the series with Santa Clara when the two teams face off for the final time in this four-game set tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 1 at John Smith Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. PT with gates at noon.
