SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Jordyn Brent scored a career best in the all-around and helped lead the Sacramento State gymnastics team to a season high on Friday night at The Nest. The Hornets totaled 194.225 but were edged by San Jose State by .050 points as the Spartans scored 194.275.
Brent scored 39.175 to finish first in the all-around and top her previous career best of 39.075 which came earlier this season. The junior tied for the team lead on vault with a 9.700 and led the Hornets on bars with a 9.850. After scoring 9.800 on beam, she paced the team with a 9.825 on floor to lead the team once again.
The Hornets' night was also highlighted by Amber Koeth who scored a career best 9.900 to tie for second place on beam. Koeth's score is tied for sixth in school history and makes her the 14th individual to score at least 9.900 in the event in school history.
Sacramento State led throughout the competition before seeing its lead evaporate during the final rotation. The Hornets led by seven-tenths going into floor in the fourth rotation and scored 48.500. However, San Jose State was near-perfect on beam, totaling 49.250 to sneak past the Hornets.
Sacramento State opened the competition with a 48.250 on vault. Destiny Watley and Brent tied for the team lead and for fourth place in the meet with each scoring 9.700. That score gave the team an early lead as SJSU counted a fall on bars leaving the team with a 47.500.
The Spartans were able to close the gap slightly in the second rotation with a total of 48.675 on vault compared to a 48.500 from the Hornets. The Hornets counted five scores of 9.625 or better led by Brent's 9.850 and a 9.750 from Courtnee Marquez who tied for third place.
Sacramento State's highest score on the night came on beam where the team received a 48.975. Taylor Weber started the rotation with a 9.775 and the scores continued to rise with a 9.800 from Brent and a 9.850 from Kendra Braida before Koeth contributed her 9.900. The Spartans countered with a 48.850 on floor during the third rotation.
The fourth rotation went back-and-forth with SJSU landing the first big punches. Tia Gin scored 9.750 in the leadoff spot while Bella Lahmidi received a 9.675 for the Hornets on floor. Momentum swung in the second routine as Jada Mazury scored 9.850 and Destiny Watley was injured on her first pass on floor and count not continue for Sacramento State.
The Spartans went on to get scores of 9.900 from Chelsea Andrada, 9.825 from Taylor Chan and a school-record tying 9.925 from Emma Milne. Those scores proved to be too much for the Hornets as Anna LeRoy's 9.775 and Brent's 9.825 were the only scores above a 9.7 for the team in its final four routines.
Sacramento State will hold its season night next Saturday, March 8, when the team takes on UC Davis at 7 p.m. Following the meet, the team will honor seniors Alexis Belkoff and Tara Catour who will be competing at The Nest for the final time.
