STOCKTON, Calif. – On a windy Thursday night in Stockton, the Sacramento State baseball team (2-2) and Pacific Tigers (5-0) traded leads for six innings before the Tigers blew things open late. A six-run eighth for the Tigers put the game out of reach for the Hornets, who fell, 11-3, Thursday.

Sacramento State fell behind early as the Tigers scored in each of the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. But the Hornets tied things up after back-to-back RBI doubles by Keith Torres and Matt Smith in the fourth.

Pacific went ahead again, scoring again in the home half of the fourth, but the Hornets tied things for a second time in the fifth after Trevor Doyle scored without the benefit of a hit. The freshman right-fielder was hit by a pitch, advanced on a wild pitch, then a passed ball, before scoring on a throwing error.

It was a wind-aided home run that put Pacific back on top for good in the home half of the sixth. Taking a 5-3 lead into the eighth, opening things up even more, scoring six runs in the inning to go up, 11-3.

Before things got out of hand late, freshman Travis Adams made his first career start for the Hornets and impressed, throwing five strong innings. He allowed three runs on six hits but did not walk a batter and struck out three. He also navigated multiple tight situations, including a bases-loaded, no-out jam in which just one run would score.

At the plate, Torres made his first start in the leadoff spot and did not disappoint, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored. Torres finished his freshman season with a .395 on base percentage, best among all returning players this year and second on the team overall.

Smith also drove in a run, going 1-for-4 with an RBI double. Smith is now hitting .353 on the season. He and centerfielder Bronson Grubbs (.375) lead the team with six hits each.

Evan Gibbons also doubled for the Hornets, his second of the season.

The win went to Pacific's Henrik Reinertsen, who goes to 1-1 on the year. Brady Rodriguez, who gave up the two-run home run in the sixth, was charged with the loss, his first of the year.
