VOLLEYBALL MOVES INTO 2ND PLACE AFTER BEATING MONTANA, 3-1

SACRAMENTO -- Sarah Davis led all players with 19 kills, Cianna Andrews had 13 kills and seven blocks, and Macey Hayden 10 kills and 14 digs to lead Sacramento State to a 3-1 victory (25-14, 25-17, 24-26, 26-24) over Montana on Thursday evening inside the Nest.

The Hornets have now won five of their last six matches while improving to 11-11 overall and 6-3 in the Big Sky Conference. The win also allowed Sacramento State to move into a tie for second place in the league standings with Idaho. Northern Colorado (8-1) suffered its first conference loss of the season tonight, and the Hornets are just two games back of first place.

Sacramento State is now 5-3 at home this season, and 3-2 against Big Sky foes inside the Nest. The team is at the midway point of the conference season with nine more regular season games to play before hosting the Big Sky Tournament Nov. 28-30.

The Hornets are 32-14 all-time against Montana, and 18-4 when playing the Griz at home. That includes wins in seven of the last eight matchups inside the Nest.

The Grizzlies dropped to 2-18 overall and 1-8 in league play.

After winning the first two sets easily, Sacramento State and Montana played even during the third and fourth frames as both resulted in 26-24 scores. In the fourth, the Hornets overcame a 22-20 deficit and squandered one match point at 24-23 before a kill from setter Ashtin Olin eventually ended things at 26-24 in Sacramento State's favor.

The Hornets dominated in kills (59-41) and hitting percentage (.224-.165) while also holding advantages in aces (9-8) and digs (62-59).

For Davis, it marked the 16th straight match she has led the Hornets in kills after finishing with 19 kills, seven digs and a .275 hitting percentage. In addition, she is just 35 kills shy of reaching 1,000 for her career. Andrews had 13 kills, a .333 hitting percentage and career-high tying seven blocks. Three of those blocks were solo stuffs. For Hayden, tonight was her sixth double-double of the year as the junior finished with 10 kills, 14 digs and a pair of aces.

Olin had 42 assists, two aces and 11 digs. She also finished with two kills in three swings, including the match winner in the fourth set. Libero Michelle Taynton led all players with 17 digs and McKenna Smith added five assists and seven digs. Sarah Falk, Smith and Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin each had a pair of kills.

Montana was led by Amethyst Harper's 15 kills and 15 digs.

Sacramento State will hop on a plane for Bozeman, Mont., in the morning as they take on the Bobcats on Saturday at 6 p.m. PDT. The Hornets are right back at home next week for matchups against Idaho on Thursday and Eastern Washington on Saturday.
