OGDEN, Utah — Sacramento State led from start to finish in the decisive fifth set, and picked up another road win, this time at Weber State, 3-2 (25-21, 17-25, 25-19, 15-25, 15-11), on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Gym.

Sacramento State was playing in its school-record fifth consecutive five-set match, and was able to win its third straight. During the Hornets' run of five-set matches, Sacramento State is 3-2 which includes a road win at Idaho State on Thursday, and home victory last Saturday vs. Northern Arizona.

The Hornets improved to 9-10 overall and 4-2 in the Big Sky Conference, while Weber State dropped to 11-6 and 2-4 in league play. The Wildcats were selected second in the Big Sky preseason coaches poll while the Hornets were picked third.

After the two teams split the first four sets, Sacramento State jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fifth and never trailed. The Wildcats cut the deficit to 5-4, 6-5, 7-6 and 8-7, but could never get over the hump. During that fifth frame, the Hornets' Cianna Andrews, Kayla Subbert and Sarah Davis each had three kills. Andrews' three kills came on four swings, and she added two blocks (including a solo). The Hornets had 12 kills compared to six and a .115 hitting percentage for the Wildcats.

Weber State hit for a much higher percentage than Sacramento State (.194-.138), but the Hornets held advantages in kills (65-51), assists (64-48), aces (6-4) and digs (79-78).

For the Hornets, Davis went over the 20-kill mark in her fifth consecutive match, finishing with 22 kills, 15 digs, two aces and a pair of blocks.  The Big Sky's leader in kills is now averaging 4.22 per set overall, and 4.93 per set in league play.

Outside hitter Macey Hayden had a season-best 17 kills to go along with 20 digs, a pair of blocks and a .297 hitting percentage. Hayden had kills in seven of her first nine swings, and did not have an attack error until the third set. Subbert had 10 kills, two blocks and a .286 hitting percentage. Andrews, who was a monster in the fifth set, finished with seven kills and team-best five blocks.

Setter Ashtin Olin registered her third straight match with 60+ assists, finishing with 60 assists, two aces, six digs and three blocks. She also put things away with a crafty dump on match point.

Libero Michelle Taynton went over 20 digs for the third straight and fourth time in the last five with a match-best 23. Paige Swinney added 11 digs, and middle blocker Sarah Falk had four kills and four blocks. True freshman Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin had four kills in four swings, including an important kill in the fifth set to give Sacramento State a 7-5 lead.

Weber State received 16 kills from Dani Nay, and 14 kills, 13 digs and five blocks from Megan Gneiting.

After playing four of their first six Big Sky matches on the road, Sacramento State will play five of the next six at home.
