BASEBALL ALLOWS JUST TWO HITS IN 4-1 WIN OVER CAL TUESDAY NIGHT

Box Score

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Sacramento State baseball team held the California Golden Bears and their top-10 offense to just two hits Tuesday night, beating Cal on the road, 4-1.

The Hornets (22-17, 9-3 WAC) emptied the bullpen Tuesday night as head coach Reggie Christiansen and the Hornets used six pitchers against the Pac-12's Cal (23-15, 9-9 Pac-12). The quintet limited the Bears to just two hits and one run all night, despite Cal owning the nation's eighth-best batting average.

In addition to having the eighth-best batting average in all of NCAA Div. I baseball, Cal is also top-50 in the country in slugging percentage (16th), on base percentage (22nd), scoring (31st), home runs (26th), and runs (45th). They had no answer for Sacramento State's pitchers Tuesday night, though, scoring just one run on two hits.

Ty Fox got the start for Sacramento State and was the only Hornets pitcher to allow a hit Tuesday night. He threw three innings, allowing just one run on two hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out two.

After recording their second hit against Fox in the third inning, Cal found themselves at a loss against the Sacramento State bullpen. After Fox, the Hornets used five more pitchers to combine for six no-hit innings.

Austin Roberts was first for the Hornets, throwing a scoreless fourth inning. Though he did walk two in the inning, he was able to work around the free passes and get out of the jam.

After that, Travis Martizia threw a hitless fifth before Alex Dentoni struck out two in the sixth.

Freshman Stone Churby, making his first appearance since April 2, struck out two in a perfect seventh before Tanner Dalton finished things out.

Dalton, the defending WAC Pitcher of the Week, threw two perfect innings, recording his seventh save and third in as many games. It was his team-leading 20th appearance for Sacramento State.

The two hits allowed are the second fewest in a game this season by Sacramento State. The Hornets held UC Santa Barbara to just one hit over nine innings on March 18 and limited Chicago State to one hit over seven innings in game one of their April 7 doubleheader.

Offensively, the Hornets did all of their damage in the second inning, scoring four times on four hits and a walk. The big hit of the inning came off the bat of Ian Dawkins, who stroked a two-run double to left-center to make it a 4-0 ballgame. Dawkins finished 2-for-3 on the night with a double, a walk, and two RBIs.

He also started at second base for the first time in his career for Sacramento State, who are playing with a short bench due to injury. PJ Floyd made his second start at first base while Josh Urps and Bronson Grubbs both returned to the starting lineup, as well.

The win is Sacramento State's third against a Pac-12 team this season and their 14th since 2012. Since the start of the 2012 season, the Hornets have played 31 games against Pac-12 opponents and are now 14-17 in those games.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 22-17 for the season while they maintain their 9-3 record against WAC opponents. They'll kick off their fifth conference series of the year on Friday as they make the trip to Texas to take on UT Rio Grande Valley. They will play a three-game series starting Friday night at 7:00 pm.
