CATHEDRAL CITY -- Leadoff hitter Jenna Curtan had two hits and three RBIs, and pitcher Hailey Dolcini tossed a complete game as UC Riverside defeated Sacramento State, 7-1, in the fifth and final round of the Mary Nutter Softball Classic in Southern California.

The three-day tournament, which was played at Big League Dreams Complex in Cathedral City, featured 16 teams playing 42 games. Appearing in the Mary Nutter for the first time, Sacramento State completed the tournament with a 2-3 record. That includes victories over Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara, and losses to Syracuse, Army and UC Riverside. Sacramento State split two games on Friday, got another split on Saturday, and lost its lone game this morning.

The Hornets are now 3-6 overall this season while UC Riverside improved to 7-3. The Highlanders, who play Cal later today, are 4-0 at the tournament thus far.

During the five-game tournament, Sacramento State pitcher Celina Matthias was 2-1 with a 1.64 ERA while Jessica Scott hit .455, Sydney Rasmussen .357 and Nene Alas .353. Both Alas and Marissa Maligad hit safely in each of the last three games of the tournament.

In today's game, UC Riverside scored four times in the third inning, once in the fourth and twice in the fifth. The Highlanders finished with seven runs and 10 hits while Sacramento State could muster just one run on four hits against Dolcini.

During UCR's four-run third inning, the Highlanders sent nine batters to the plate while recording five hits. Four UC Riverside players had RBIs during the inning, including an RBI-double from Curtan.

Sacramento State, which was held hitless through the first four innings, finally broke through for a run in the sixth after Kaitlyn Rubio's two-out double scored Suzy Brookshire. However, that was all the Hornets would get as they stranded two runners on base in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Alas, Rubio, Scott and Maligad accounted for Sacramento State's four hits in the game. Matthias (3-2) took the loss, working the first four innings while Savanna Corr tossed three innings of relief. Dolcini improve to 2-1 while allowing just four hits and an unearned run over seven innings.

Sacramento State will play twice more this week when the Hornets host Stanford for a doubleheader on Thursday at noon. The Hornets will be playing Stanford for the first time since 2011, and will be hosting the Cardinal at Shea Stadium for the first time since 2008.
