BASEBALL HITS THREE HOME RUNS IN 9-5 WIN OVER SAN FRANCISCO

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State got home runs from Dawsen Bacho, Vinny Esposito, and Kody Reynolds and recorded a pair of four-run innings to defeat San Francisco 9-5 on a rainy Monday night at John Smith Field.

Sacramento State (18-18) ended its nine-game homestand with the win and tied a season-high with three home runs. The Hornets pounded out 15 hits and had three doubles to slug their way past San Francisco (18-19). The teams will meet again tomorrow at 3 p.m. in San Francisco.

Five different Hornets had two-hit games while freshman Ricky Martinez had his second consecutive three-hit game. After falling behind 1-0 Sacramento State scored four times in the bottom of the third and, after USF came back to tie the game twice, broke a 5-5 tie with four runs in the bottom of the 7th.

USF took the early lead on a Matt Sinatro RBI single in the top of the third, but in the bottom half the Hornets had six hits with a two-run homer to straight away center field from Bacho and a 2-run blast from Esposito that reached the top level of the parking structure along the left field line.

The Dons came right back with three runs in the top of the fourth on four hits but could not take the lead as Hornet second baseman PJ Floyd made a stellar diving stop and throw to first for the third out, preventing another run from scoring.

In the fifth inning Reynolds cleared the wall in left field with his fourth home run of the season to give the Hornets a 5-4 lead. The Dons loaded the bases with one out in the seventh and scored the tying run on a Michael Perri sacrifice fly but again left two men aboard.

Martinez opened the bottom of the seventh with a double and scored from third on an RBI single from Esposito. With two out and runners on first and second, junior Andrew McWilliam laced a double down the left field line to score one run and Floyd followed with a double of his own inside the left field line to bring in two more Hornet runs.

Senior Tanner Olson, who was the fifth Hornet pitcher of the game, retired all six batters he faced with a pair of strikeouts to close out the final two innings. Ty Fox picked up his second win of the season in relief while Joey Steele took the loss for the Dons.

Ryan Smith and Chad Perry also authored scoreless innings out of the Hornet bullpen. Esposito had a team-high three RBIs while he and McWilliam both scored two runs. Sinatro had three of USF's nine hits and Perri had two, including a double.

Hornet freshman Austin Roberts and Don sophomore Benji Post are the expected starters for the rematch in the city on Tuesday.
