Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Jessica Ravetti hit a three-run homer as part of a 4-run fourth inning and right-hander Celina Matthias threw a complete game as Sacramento State defeated CSUN, 4-2, in the first round of the Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton.
The win marked the first of five games the Hornets will play over three days at the tournament, which includes games against CSUN (formerly Cal State Northridge) and Seattle tomorrow, and a pair of games against host Pacific on Sunday.
The victory allowed the Hornets to improve to 3-3 this season while the Matadors dropped to 2-8. Today also marked Sacramento State's first win over CSUN since a 5-4 victory in Poway on Feb. 16, 2003.
The Matadors took an early 1-0 lead in the first after a solo home run from Katie Hooper. Meanwhile, CSUN starter Katie Chenault was cruising along as she faced the minimum amount of batters through three innings. However, in the top of the fourth, Sydney Rasmussen was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Zamari Hinton then placed down a bunt that CSUN threw to second base to try and force Rasmussen. However, Rasmussen easily beat the throw and the Hornets had runners at first and second with no outs.
That brought up Ravetti, who drove an 0-1 pitch well over the left field wall that gave the Hornets a 3-1 lead. The home run was the second of the season for Ravetti, and the fourth-year senior now has a team-best eight RBIs this year. In fact, those eight RBIs are four more than any other player on the team.
Sacramento State would tack on three more hits in the inning, the latter a two-out, RBI-single from Nene Alas which scored Shelby Johnston from third base.
CSUN sliced the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth, but the damage could have been much worse. The Matadors loaded the bases with no outs in the inning, but Matthias limited the damage, allowing only a one-out sacrifice fly to Jessica Alexander. Matthias set down the final three batters of the inning in order, and that began a stretch of nine straight batters retired for the junior.
With Sacramento State leading, 4-2, CSUN led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a pinch hit single to right from Taylor Nate. That set up the biggest play of the game as Alexander drove a ball into the left-center field gap that Hornet center fielder Johnston caught on a full extension dive to her backhand. The Matadors would eventually load the bases with two outs, but Matthias struck out leadoff hitter Taylor Glover to end the game. Without the Johnston catch for the first out, the seventh inning could have been much different.
Matthias (2-2) got the win, allowing just four hits and two runs while walking one and striking out a career-high tying nine batters. The win for Matthias was the 32nd of her career, moving her into sole possession of ninth place in Sacramento State's Div. I history (1990-pres.).
Chenault (0-1) got the loss, allowing five hits and four runs over four innings. The Matadors' Daphne Pofek worked three innings of hitless relief.
Ravetti finished the game 1-for-3 with the big blast and three RBIs while Alas went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Both Tiffany Moore and Suzy Brookshire added singles as the two teams combined for just nine hits (SAC 5, CSUN 4). Alas is now 4-for-6 over her last two games after beginning the season by going hitless in her first four games.
The Hornets are back in action tomorrow for games against CSUN at 10 a.m. and Seattle U at 2:30 p.m.
