Box Score OGDEN, Utah — Sacramento State and Weber State took part in a rare Big Sky Conference defensive battle before the Wildcats prevailed 14-7 on Saturday night at Stewart Stadium.
The loss dropped the Hornets to 0-3 on the season while Weber State improved to 1-2. Though Sacramento State and Weber State are both members of the Big Sky Conference, Saturday's contest was played as a non-conference game.
Both teams were scoreless in the first quarter before Sacramento State took a 7-0 lead on a 9-yard rush from Demetrius Warren. Weber State tied the game shortly after with a 7-yard pass from Jadrian Clark to Drew Batchelor.
The score remained knotted until 1:42 remained in the game when Clark scampered for a 10-yard rush. The Hornets had one final shot but Kolney Cassel's fourth-down pass intended for Isiah Hennie was overthrown.
Sacramento State used two quarterbacks in the game, starting sophomore Nate Ketteringham who was 2-for-5 for nine yards. The team turned to Cassel in the second quarter and the junior completed 14-of-32 passes for 116 yards. The Hornets produced their most effective rushing attack of the season led by 81 yards from Warren. Jordan Robinson added 43 and Ketteringham had 11.
Hennie led the Sacramento State receivers with eight receptions for 92 yards.
Clark was 25-of-35 for 375 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Cam Livingston had a team high 108 yards and tight end Andrew Vollert had 101 yards. Darryl Denby led the Wildcats with seven receptions.
Defensively, linebacker Manoah Pearson led all players with 16 total tackles and Tyler Meteer had 11 (his second consecutive game in double digits).
Sacramento State will continue its road swing next Saturday at Idaho State. The game will begin at 1:30 p.m. PT from Holt Arena.
QUOTABLE
"I'm obviously disappointed but compared to where we were after week one to week three we've come a long way. I like the way our defense and special teams are playing right now. We just have to stay at it, stay consistent and be deliberate and diligent in our process because they are willing."
Head Coach Jody Sears
SCORING SUMMARY
Second Quarter
14:10 - For the second consecutive week the Hornets took advantage of a special teams miscue. Nolan Merker's punt hit off the head of a Weber State blocker and was recovered by freshman Allen Perryman. The ball was originally ruled to have hit off of Perryman first but was overruled by replay, setting up 1st-and-goal from the 9. After a lengthy review the Hornets gave the ball to Demetrius Warren, who scored on a rush up the middle for his first touchdown since the opening game of 2014.
9:05 - Weber State needed just 1:37 to tie the game. A 39-yard completion to tight end Andrew Vollert in the middle of the field was followed by a 36-yard arching pass to Cam Livingston to take the ball inside the 10. The Wildcats scored when Clark hit Drew Batchelor for a 7-yard touchdown.
Fourth Quarter
1:42 - Quarterback Jadrian Clark gave Weber State its first lead of the game with a 10-yard keeper to the right side. The Wildcats faced 3rd-and-14 from near midfield during the drive after a tackle-for-loss from Manny Scott-Anderson. Clark completed a 13-yard pass to Andrew Vollert and then rushed for 7 yards on 4th-and-1. Two plays later, Clark had a 19-yard rush to set up his TD run.
NOTES
• The 21 total points were the fourth fewest in a Big Sky game for Sacramento State. The three lower totals were a 14-0 win at Northern Colorado in 2011, a 17-3 loss to Montana in 2007, and a 13-7 loss to Portland State in 2006.
• Sophomore kicker Devon Medeiros injured his quadricep in warm-ups and was unable to compete. Tanner Kuljian took over the duties and hit an extra point.
• Jordan Robinson passed Rob Harrison to move into sixth place in Sacramento State career rushing history. Harrison had 1,924 yards between 1985-86 and later played for the Los Angeles Raiders
• Weber State appeared to take a lead in the second quarter on a 51-yard pass to Drew Batchelor. However, video review ruled that Batchelor lost the ball prior to crossing the goal line. The ball went out of the side of the end zone and was ruled a touchback.
• Sacramento State created three turnovers in the first half with the first coming on the punt. The second came when Batchelor lost the ball out of the end zone and the final on Marcus Bruce's first career interception with four seconds left in the first half at the Hornet 12.
• Pearson set a career high with 16 total tackles. His total was the highest by a Hornet since Darnell Sankey had 17 against UC Davis in last season's Causeway Classic.
