Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Pacific's Marissa Young threw a six-hit shutout to lead the Tigers to a 4-0 victory over Sacramento State in a non-conference softball game on Tuesday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
Playing the first of just two remaining non-conference games on the regular season schedule, Sacramento State saw its record fall to 15-15 overall. The Tigers, who also defeated the Hornets earlier this season in Stockton, improved to 17-13.
Today's game was added to the schedule two weeks ago as a makeup to a game between the two teams that was rained out in Stockton on March 13.
The Hornets had won five straight home games prior to today's defeat, and fell to 6-2 on their home field.
Sacramento State's Sasha Margulies (3-for-3) and Kortney Solis (2-for-3) combined for five of the Hornets' six hits, but the team could not score on Young. Both of Solis' hits were doubles and were the only extra base hits of the game for either team.
Young allowed just six hits while walking none and striking out six batters. Sacramento State did get runners in scoring position with two outs in four different innings, but Young was able to work out of the jam each time. In fact, the Hornets got a runner to third base with two outs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but could not come through with the big hit.
Meanwhile, Pacific jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning with three unearned runs. Perhaps the biggest play of the day occurred with one out and a runner at first base in the second when an easy comebacker was hit to Hornet starting pitcher Savanna Corr. After fielding the ball, Corr turned to throw to second for the force, but threw the ball wildly into center field.
That put runners at first and second, and, after a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Sarah Anderson followed with a two-run single and Haylee Moran-Rowen added an RBI-single.
The Tigers added an insurance run in the seventh after Rachel Sellers' single to right field allowed Moran-Rowen to score.
Corr (2-2) went the distance, allowing six hits and four runs (one earned) while striking out four over seven innings. She threw 128 pitches while Young threw 90 pitches.
Margulies now has a seven-game hitting streak, and is 6-for-7 at the plate over the last two games. In the process, she raised her batting average to a team-best .398.
Sacramento State will now jump back into Big Sky Conference play later this week when the team travels to Greeley, Colo., for a three-game series at Northern Colorado on Friday and Saturday. The Hornets and Bears will play a doubleheader on Friday at noon PDT, and a single game on Saturday at noon PDT.
