Box Score OGDEN, Utah - Sacramento State won its sixth consecutive road match on Friday, taking the doubles point and four singles matches for a 5-2 victory at Weber State.
Sacramento State (13-8, 9-1 Big Sky) clinched at least the No. 2 seed for next week's Big Sky Tournament at Gold River Racquet Club and a bye in the first round. The top six teams in the final regular season standings qualify for the Big Sky Tournament with the top two earning byes into the semifinals. Sacramento State will open postseason play next Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Hornets are now tied with Northern Arizona at 9-1 atop the Big Sky standings. Tomorrow, on the final day of the regular season, Sacramento State plays at Idaho State while Northern Arizona plays at Southern Utah. If the teams finished tied for first place NAU would be the top seed for the conference tournament by virtue of beating the Hornets, 4-3, in Flagstaff in March.
In Friday's match the Hornets won a pair of doubles matches to clinch the first point. Junior Andie Mouzes and sophomore Emily McColl earned a quick 6-1 win at No. 3 before juniors Deimante Bulatovaite and Alina Soltanici won 6-4 at No. 2 to secure the point. The No. 1 doubles match was tied 5-5 but went unfinished when the point was clinched.
In singles Soltanici cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 over Weber State's top player, Agata Bachanek. Sophomore Ana Loaiza Esquivias won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 and the Hornets clinched the team win when Mouzes beat Devi Hasan 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5.
Weber State (8-13, 7-3 Big Sky), which will be the No. 4 seed for the Big Sky Tournament, earned straight set wins at No. 2 and No. 6. Senior Jennifer Ong closed the scoring for the Hornets with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Sara Parker in the No. 3 match.
Sacramento State can clinch at least a share of the Big Sky regular season title with a win at Idaho State on Saturday morning. The Bengals have been eliminated from postseason contention.
