Box Score CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Sacramento State women's tennis team won its fifth straight match - all on the road - and picked up its fourth 7-0 sweep in the last five matches with a shutout of Southern Utah on Thursday in Cedar City.
Sacramento State (12-8, 8-1 Big Sky) moved closer to securing a bye in the first round of the Big Sky Tournament. With two more Big Sky road matches to close the regular season over the next two days the Hornets trail only 9-1 Northern Arizona in the conference standings. The Lumberjacks close their regular season playing at Southern Utah (3-17, 2-8 Big Sky) on Saturday.
The Hornets swept both doubles and singles play on Thursday. The visitors dropped just six total games in three doubles matches, with juniors Alina Soltanici and Deimante Bulatovaite finishing first with a 6-1 win at No. 2. Junior Andie Mouzes and sophomore Emily McColl won 6-2 at No. 3 and a 6-3 Hornet win at No. 1 completed the sweep.
Sacramento State won four singles matches in straight sets. Mouzes cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Emily Lemmon at No. 4 and sophomore Ana Loaiza Esquivias won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3. The Hornets clinched the match win when McColl completed a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Laura Martin Lozano at No. 5.
Freshman Sofia Wicker also had a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 6. The top two singles matches went three sets but the Hornets came out victorious in third-set tiebreakers in both. Soltanici dropped a tight first set but came back to beat Veronilka Rogova 6-7, 6-1, 10-7 at No. 1 and Bulatovaite won 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 at No. 2.
Bulatovaite and Loaiza Esquivias both remained undefeated (9-0) in Big Sky singles play this season. The Hornets play at Weber State Friday morning and close the regular season at Idaho State on Saturday.
