ROWING WRAPS UP WEEKEND WITH THREE WINS AGAINST LOYOLA MARYMOUNT

Results from each of today's races

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State's varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four each finished first in their respective races against Loyola Marymount, highlighting the second and final day of the eighth-annual Lake Natoma Rowing Invitational Sunday morning at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.

The two-day, nine-team regatta featured a powerhouse lineup that included seven nationally ranked teams, not to mention the top two programs in the nation. Among the schools at the event included top ranked Brown, No. 2 Cal, No. 7 Stanford, No. 12 Wisconsin, No. 15 Gonzaga, No. 16 Iowa, and No. 18 Notre Dame. Sacramento State and Loyola Marymount rounded out the field. The Hornets co-hosted the event with Cal.

The Hornets' varsity eight raced to a winning time of 6:39.69 over 2,000 meters in its victory over Loyola Marymount (6:41.50). The impressive time is the fastest of the season under good conditions as the varsity eight was racing today on flat water and conditions that were perfect. Sacramento State's top boat posted a 6:15.00 in the season opener, but that was racing with a current of 16,000-18,000 CFS.

The Hornets' second varsity eight raced to a winning time of 6:51.34, followed by Loyola Marymount (6:56.35).

In addition, the team's varsity four won its race with a time of 7:39.21, followed by Loyola Marymount (7:51.72).

The Hornets also competed a pair of boats in this morning's third varsity eight petite final which saw Stanford win with a time of 6:38.76, followed by Sacramento State's third varsity eight (7:19.10) and the Hornets' fourth varsity eight (7:25.40).

"I was happy with the effort in all three of our victories today," Sacramento State head coach Mike Connors said. "It was good to get wins, especially in the varsity eight. We took advantage of the good conditions and went out and pulled good times.

"Overall, it was a great way to end the weekend especially after our performance yesterday, which was a little rough."

Sacramento State returns to the water when the team hosts the WIRA Championships on April 30-May 1.
