BASEBALL COMPLETES SEASON SWEEP OF NEVADA WITH 7-2 WIN IN RENO

RENO, Nev. – Sacramento State got six strong innings for starter Tanner Olson, Chris Lewis went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs, and juniors Gunner Pollman and Brandon Hunley hit solo home runs as the Hornets defeated Nevada, 7-2, on Tuesday night in Reno.

The Hornets beat Nevada for the second time this year after a 5-2 win at Raley Field March 6. Sacramento State (19-13) out hit the Wolf Pack 10-8 and allowed just one extra base hit. Nevada (15-15) had won eight of its last 10 games.

Pollman and Hunley hit consecutive solo home runs in the fourth inning. Both also reached base four times, with each going 2-for-2 while Pollman drew two walks and Hunley was hit by a pitch twice. Pollman scored three runs while Lewis, hitting leadoff, had three hits and three RBIs with a run scored and a double. Sophomore Bronson Grubbs drove in a run and scored one as well.

Olson allowed two runs on just four hits with one walk and three strikeouts over six innings, throwing just 68 pitches. The Wolf Pack scored twice in the first inning but were held scoreless for the remainder of the game with scoreless innings pitched from Jonny Palsha, Chad Perry, and Tyler Beardsley in relief.

Lewis and senior Trent Goodrich began the game with consecutive singles and Lewis scored the first run on an RBI groundout by Andrew McWilliam, who picked up his 10th RBI in the last eight games. Nevada's first three batters had hits to open the bottom of the first and scored twice, but Olson allowed just one more hit over the next five innings.

Sacramento State tied the game at 2-2 in the second inning with a Pollman single, a Hunley double, and an RBI groundout by Grubbs. The Hornets took the lead when Pollman and Hunley hit consecutive one-out home runs in the fourth inning and Lewis doubled home Grubbs with two away to push the lead to three runs.

The visitors added two insurance runs in the eighth inning when Lewis singled home Pollman and Hunley with two away. Nevada had just five hits over the last eight innings of the game and the Hornets turned three double plays defensively.

Sacramento State had 10 at-bats with runners in scoring position in the game while Nevada had just four. Hornet pitchers allowed only one walk in the game. Nevada starter Zach Wilkins, facing Sacramento State for the second time this year, took the loss allowing five earned runs on six hits and a hit batter in 3.2 innings pitched.

The Hornets return home for a weekend WAC series against Chicago State with games at 3 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday, and noon Sunday. Sacramento State swept each of its first two WAC home series this year.
