Box Score BOZEMAN, Mont. – Sacramento State won its fourth straight Big Sky road match in convincing fashion on Sunday, claiming the doubles point and five of six singles matches for a 6-1 win over Montana State.
With the win Sacramento State (11-8, 7-1 Big Sky) remained in the hunt for the regular season Big Sky title. Northern Arizona has played two more league matches than the Hornets and is 9-1 in the Big Sky with one match remaining. The Hornets have three conference matches remaining, all on the road April 21-23. The Lumberjacks beat the Hornets in Flagstaff on March 24 and thus own the tiebreaker.
After three straight 7-0 Big Sky road wins the Hornets nearly had another sweep on Sunday. Montana State (7-14, 5-5 Big Sky) claimed the No. 1 doubles match but not before Sacramento State clinched the point. Sophomores Emily McColl and Anna-Maria Nau cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 3 while juniors Deimante Bulatovaite and Alina Soltanici won 6-2 at No. 2.
Sophomore Ana Loaiza Esquivias dropped just one game in her singles match at No. 4, beating Jessica Brycki 6-0, 6-1. Montana State's Naomi Holopainen picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jennifer Ong at No. 2 but that would be the only point secured by the home team.
At No. 3 Bulatovaite beat Angelina Philippova 6-3, 6-3 and the match victory was clinched for the Hornets at No. 1, where Soltanici battled back after dropping the first set to defeat Laura Middel 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Sacramento State picked up two more straight-set wins at the last two singles spots. Nau remained undefeated in singles play this season with a quick 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 and junior Andie Mouzes won at No. 5, 7-5, 6-1.
Nau improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in Big Sky singles this year while she and McColl are 6-0 in Big Sky doubles play. Bulatovaite and Loaiza Esquivias are both 8-0 in Big Sky singles matches.
The Hornets are off for 10 days before concluding the regular season with matches at Southern Utah, Weber State, and Idaho State April 21-23, respectively.
