SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State had individuals finish first in all four events as well as the all-around during a 194.000-192.500 victory over Brown on Friday night at The Nest. The victory kept the Hornets undefeated in dual meets this season in six meets.
Sacramento State trailed by .6 entering the final rotation but scored 48.925 on floor compared to a 46.825 from Brown on beam. The late surge helped the team score at least 194 for the eighth time in nine meets this season but was not not strong enough to improve the Hornets' regional qualifying score.
The team started the meet with a 48.825 on vault, counting five scores between 9.700 and 9.825. Julia Konner earned her fourth individual victory of the season on vault with a 9.825 and senior Kalliah McCartney tied for second at 9.800.
Sacramento State encountered trouble at the start of the second rotation. The first two gymnasts fell, leaving the team scrambling to salvage a 48.125. Courtney Soliwoda started the comeback with a 9.800 to tie for second in the meet. McCartney immediately followed with a season-high tying 9.850 and finished first on bars for the third time in 2016. Cassie Benning contributed a 9.725 before Julia Konner scored 9.650 in her first bar routine in the lineup this year.
The Hornets trailed .025 at the midway point of the meet and started beam with a fall. Benning and Megan Kyle each scored 9.725 and Soliwoda continued the climb with a 9.775 to win her first individual title in any event. However, a second fall forced the team to count a mishap and left Sacramento State with another 48.125.
Needing to rally to continue its home winning streak, the Hornets scored 48.925. Jennifer Brenner, McCartney and Lauren Rice each scored 9.775 to tie for third. Benning led all gymnasts with a 9.850 to win the event for the third time this season.
McCartney captured the all-around with a four-event total of 39.050. The senior has now scored 39-plus six times this season, including the last three meets. The victory was her fourth in the all-around this year and the 16th of her career.
Sacramento State will conclude the regular season on Friday, March 11, at UC Davis in a meet which also includes Cal. The Hornets will then host the MPSF Championships on Saturday, March 19, at 6 p.m.
