Box Score FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Sacramento State shot 44% from the field and 45% from 3-point range, knocking down 21 three-pointers in an easy 111-79 victory over Northern Arizona in the regular season finale Friday night.
Despite the win a victory by Weber State made Sacramento State (13-16, 10-8 Big Sky) the No. 7 seed for the Big Sky Tournament. The Hornets will open play in Reno at 5:35 p.m. Monday against the No. 10 seed Southern Utah. The Hornets and Thunderbirds played for the first time this season on Wednesday with Sacramento State recording an 82-72 road win in Cedar City.
With a win on Monday the Hornets would face the No. 2 seed, Eastern Washington, in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday at 5:30. The teams split two meetings this year with each winning on the other's home floor.
Northern Arizona (6-23, 2-16 Big Sky) finished tied with Southern Utah and Portland State at the bottom of the league standings, but with tiebreakers the Thunderbirds got the 10 seed, the Vikings 11th, and the Lumberjacks 12th.
Sophomore Taylor Brown made seven 3-pointers on Friday and scored a career-high 21 points shooting 7-of-12 from 3-point range. Sophomore Maranne Johnson also scored 21 points and hit six threes while junior Gretchen Harrigan and senior Adella Randle-El each tallied 16 points.
Randle-El added seven rebounds, six assists, and four steals while freshmen Raegen Rohn and Madeline Dopplick each hit a pair of 3-point shots. Senior Sydonia Daniels had a team-high eight rebounds as 10 of the 11 Hornets that played in the game pulled down at least two boards.
On Friday the Hornets took an 11-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Sacramento State led 27-20 at the end of the opening quarter and outscored the Lumberjacks 35-21 in the second to take a massive 62-41 lead to the intermission.
The Hornets didn't lead by fewer than 23 points for the duration of the second half. The visitors had a 31-17 scoring edge in the third quarter and led by as many as 39 points in the fourth.
Sacramento State forced 26 NAU turnovers while committing only 12 of their own, leading to a 39-10 edge in points off turnovers. The Lumberjacks had a slim 57-50 rebounding advantage as both teams surpassed 20 offensive boards. Freshman Alyssa Rader had 24 points, 17 rebounds, and five assists to lead Northern Arizona.
The Hornets recorded their fourth game this season making 20 or more 3-pointers. The rest of NCAA Div. I has one such game this year, recorded by Long Beach State. On Friday Sacramento State was one three shy of what had been the NCAA record entering the 2015-16 season before the team hit 25 threes in two games this year.
