Box Score 2 SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- After losing the first game to Nevada, 3-1, Sacramento State bounced back to defeat the Wolf Pack in mercy rule fashion, 8-0, in the nightcap of a non-conference softball doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
Both teams sat through a one hour and 12 minute rain delay during the middle of the nightcap. With the split, Sacramento State moved its record to 8-9 overall while Nevada is now 14-3. In addition, the second-game win for the Hornets snapped the Wolf Pack's 12-game winning streak.
After scoring just one run on five hits in the first game, Sacramento State broke out for eight runs and 10 hits in just four innings of at-bats in the nightcap. The second game was stopped after Nevada was retired in the top of the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Today's doubleheader was played instead of this weekend's Hornet Round Robin, which was canceled because of rain that is expected to hit the Sacramento area all weekend.
Hornet sophomore Celina Matthias (6-5) threw all 12 innings of today's doubleheader, allowing just three runs with no walks and nine strikeouts. That included a seven-hit shutout in the second game. She combined to throw just 154 pitches in the two games and allowed just one extra base hit.
Hornet second baseman Zamari Hinton had two hits in both games and finished the day 4-for-5 with a run scored. True freshman Sydnee Strong collected her first two collegiate hits while Nikki Gialketsis, Jessica Ravetti and Sasha Margulies all had a pair of hits. Ravetti finished the day with three RBIs.
GAME 2
Sacramento State scored once in the first inning, four times in the second, and three more runs in the fourth to pick up their first mercy-rule victory of the season. The Hornets had 10 hits in the game and eight of the team's nine starters had at least one hit. That included Hinton who was 2-for-2 with a run and a double, and Strong who went 2-for-3 with a run. Freshman Sydney Rasmussen reached base in all three of her plate appearances, going 1-for-1 with two hit-by-pitches and three runs scored.
The Hornets opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI-ground ball from Margulies that scored Rasmussen. In the four-run fourth inning, Nikki Gialketsis had an RBI-single, Kayla Papez had a sacrifice fly, and RBI-singles from Hinton and Margulies completed the scoring. Sacramento State had four hits in the inning, including a Strong double with one out.
With the Hornets leading, 5-0, at the end of three innings, rains began coming down hard and the tarp was quickly pulled. Both teams endured a rain delay lasting an hour and 12 minutes before play was restored. The rain didn't effect the Hornets' momentum as the team scored three times in the fourth inning on a two-run double from Ravetti followed by an RBI-double from Shelby Johnston.
Nevada loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but Matthias was able to get the final two outs to preserve the mercy rule victory. The Wolf Pack's McKenna Isenberg allowed five hits and five runs (four earned) over three innings as she fell to 5-2 this season.
GAME 1
Nevada's Brooke Bolinger (6-1) allowed just five hits and one unearned run to lead the Wolf Pack to a 3-1 victory in the opener. She retired the final eight batters of the game, and did not allow a runner past first base during the final three innings. She faced just six batters over the minimum and threw 97 pitches.
The Wolf Pack opened the scoring with three runs in the third inning against Matthias, plating two of those three runs with two outs. That included an RBI-single from Raquel Martinez and RBI-triple from Megan Sweet. Nevada did not get a runner past first base in any of the other six innings against Matthias.
Meanwhile, the Hornets got the leadoff runner aboard in each of the first four innings, but pushed across just one run. That came in the fourth inning when Ravetti's RBI-double scored Johnston. Sacramento State had just one base runner during the final three innings, and that came on a bunt single from Hinton in the fifth.
Matthias took the loss, allowing five hits and three runs without a walk and six strikeouts over seven innings. If you exclude Nevada's three-run third inning, the right-hander allowed just one hit during the other six innings.
Hinton finished the game 2-for-3 while Margulies, Ravetti and Gialketsis also collected hits.
Sacramento State does not play again until next week when the team competes at a three-day tournament hosted by Pacific in Stockton. The Hornets will play five times during the tournament, beginning on Friday against San Jose State at 2:15 p.m.
