Box Score 2 STOCKTON, Calif. — Sacramento State opened the Louisville Slugger Invitational with losses to seventh-ranked Oregon (4-1) and tournament host Pacific (7-2) on Saturday afternoon at Bill Simoni Field.
The Hornets, who had their game yesterday against San Jose State canceled because of rain, dropped to 8-11 overall and 0-2 at the tournament. The Hornets will play twice more tomorrow against these same two teams, including a game at 10 a.m. against Oregon, and 12:15 p.m. vs. Pacific.
Oregon improved to 19-4 this season while Pacific moved its record to 11-9.
Sacramento State combined for just three runs and six hits over 14 innings against Oregon starter Megan Kleist and Pacific starter Marissa Young. The Hornets used four pitchers today, and saw right-hander Celina Matthias pitch well against Oregon, allowing the Ducks four runs and five hits in a complete game effort.
VS. OREGON
Oregon starter Kleist got all the run support she would need in the second inning after teammate Gwen Svekis pounced on a 3-2 pitch and delivered a three-run homer over the left field wall. The Ducks had three runs and three hits in the inning. Matthias would allow just two hits the rest of the way as Oregon's only other run came on a two-out, RBI-single from leadoff hitter Alyssa Gillespie.
The Hornets had just one hit against Kleist (8-2), and that came with two outs in the third inning when Zamari Hinton's infield single allowed Nikki Gialketsis to score from third base. Sacramento State had just four base runners the entire game, with two of those coming on hit-by-pitch, and another reaching on an error. Kleist walked none and struck out nine batters.
Meanwhile, Matthias (6-6) was effective against the seventh ranked team in the nation, holding Oregon hitless in the first, third and sixth innings. She threw her sixth complete game of the season, yielding five runs and four hits while striking out five and throwing 102 pitches.
Hinton was the only Hornet with a hit while both Gialketsis and Sydney Rasmussen were hit by pitches.
VS. PACIFIC
Four Sacramento State pitchers combined to allow Pacific seven runs and nine hits over just six innings. The only effective Hornet hurler was Taylor Tessier, who did not allow a hit while striking out five over two innings of relief. The Tigers scored in each of the game's first four innings, posting single runs in the first, second and third, and breaking things open with a four-run fourth inning.
The Hornets scored their lone runs in the top of the fourth and sixth innings, the first of which came on an error allowing Jessica Ravetti to score. Sacramento State tacked on its second run when a ground ball from Kayla Papez allowed Shelby Johnston to score from third.
Pacific's No. 3 hitter Nicole Zapotoczny had a big game, going 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs. She connected on a three-run homer in the fourth inning to give Pacific a 7-0 lead. Leadoff hitter Sara Anderson went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI.
Sacramento State, which stranded eight runners, hit just 2-for-11 with runners on base and 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. The Hornets stranded multiple runners aboard in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. That included loading the bases with two outs in the fifth.
For Sacramento State, Hinton, Ravetti, Johnston, Papez and Sydnee Strong accounted for the Hornets' five hits. Johnston had a leadoff double in the sixth inning. Hinton was the only Hornet to hit safely in both games.
Young improved to 5-3 this season for Pacific as she allowed just two runs (one earned) and five hits over seven innings. Sacramento State's Matthias (2.0 ip), Kaitlyn Yerby (1.2 ip), Corr (0.1 ip) and Tessier (2.0 ip) all pitched in the game. Matthias (6-7) got the start and took the loss.
