Box Score BOZEMAN, Mont. – Sacramento State junior guard Brianna Burgos tied the program record with nine made 3-pointers and scored a career-high 34 points but the Hornets lost a nine point third quarter lead as Montana State recorded a 116-99 victory on Saturday in Bozeman.
Sacramento State (7-14, 4-6 Big Sky) also equaled its own NCAA record with 25 made 3-pointers, matching the Div. I record it set two weeks ago at Portland State. The team shot a solid 25-of-65 from beyond the arc but it wasn't enough as the Hornets dropped their fourth straight league game, their longest Big Sky losing streak since the 2011-12 season.
The Hornets led 59-50 at the 9:05 mark of the third quarter before a 15-0 Montana State run gave them the lead for good. Sacramento State scored the first seven points of the third quarter but was outscored 35-18 for the remainder, its fourth straight game being outscored by at least nine points in the third quarter and allowing at least 25 points in the 10-minute period.
Montana State (17-5, 10-1 Big Sky) started the game 9-of-9 from 3-point range and shot 62% overall to establish a new program scoring record. The Bobcats also made 25-of-30 free throws and had just 12 turnovers to 17 by the Hornets, marking just the second game this season that Sacramento State, which leads Div. I in turnover margin this season, lost the turnover battle.
Burgos topped her previous career high of 32 points, set in the record-breaking win at Portland State. She finished 9-of-17 from 3-point range to match the program single game record set by Michelle St. Clair in 2001 and matched by Se'nyce Parrish in 2012. She also broke the program record for 3-point attempts in a game and her 34 points were the most scored in a Big Sky game in program history.
Burgos and sophomore guard Maranne Johnson each hit five 3-pointers and tallied 15 points in the first half. The Hornets were 14-of-35 in the first half including a superb 8-of-15 (53%) from 3-point range in the second quarter. The visitors also had 15 offensive rebounds in the first half and led 52-50 at halftime following a 30-24 second quarter.
It was a 10-0 overall run that put Sacramento State up 59-50 one minute into the third quarter. Montana State then had a 15-0 run and, later in the quarter, also had a separate 10-0 run. The Bobcats led 85-77 at the end of the third then started the fourth quarter with another 10-0 run to go up 95-77 and led by double digits the rest of the way, going ahead by as many as 22 points.
The Bobcats had seven players score in double figures led by 20 points on 10-of-13 shooting by Peyton Ferris. Hannah Caudill had a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists after beating the Hornets with a game-winning three in Montana State's 80-79 win over Sacramento State in The Nest in January. Caudill was 3-of-3 from 3-point range on Saturday while Delaney Junkermier was 6-of-8 from the arc.
Johnson finished with 20 points on six made threes for her highest scoring game in Big Sky play this season. Senior Ericka Magaña made four 3-pointers and had 12 points while senior Sydonia Daniels led the team with seven rebounds. Senior Adella Randle-El, who scored a career-high 30 points at Montana on Thursday, was in foul trouble Saturday and scored just two points before fouling out at the end of the third quarter. The Hornets shot just 6-of-23 (26%) on two-point field goals in the game.
In losing the turnover battle the Hornets were outscored 34-12 in points off turnovers. Sacramento State was outrebounded by just two, 45-43, and finished with 22 offensive boards for 18 second chance points. Montana State's 116 points were the most allowed by Sacramento State against a Big Sky team in program history.
The Hornets return home next week with games Thursday night vs. Weber State and Saturday afternoon vs. Idaho State.
