Box Score MISSOULA, Mont. – Sacramento State senior guard Adella Randle-El scored a career-high 30 points but Montana led for the majority of the game and held off a late push by the Hornets for a 90-83 win on Thursday night in Missoula.
The Lady Griz led by as many as 15 points late in the third quarter, and the Hornets were able to get back within a seven-point deficit in the fourth but could get no closer. Montana (12-9, 5-5 Big Sky) ended a four-game losing streak while handing Sacramento State (7-13, 4-5 Big Sky) its third straight loss.
As has been an unfortunate recent trend, the Hornets were again undone by a poor third quarter. Sacramento State trailed by just four points, 46-42, at the half but was outscored 25-15 in the third quarter and shot just 5-of-25 (20%) from the field. During Sacramento State's three-game losing streak the team has been outscored by 31 points, 84-53, in those three third quarters.
The Griz led by just three, 51-48, with six and a half minutes left in the third quarter before going on a 20-8 run over the next six minutes to open up a game-high 71-56 lead. The Hornets scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to get within a seven-point deficit but never got any closer.
Randle-El surpassed her previous career high of 29 points, scoring 17 of her 30 points in the second half. She also had a game-high six steals as well as five rebounds and two assists in 28 minutes played.
Junior Brianna Burgos equaled her career high with six made 3-pointers and finished with 18 points while senior Sydonia Daniels recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds along with two blocks. Of the 13 Hornets that played in the game, however, just six made more than one field goal.
Sacramento State shot 13-of-47 (27.7%) from 3-point range in the game and just 35.8% overall. The Hornets shot well from the free throw line, going 12-of-14, but were outrebounded 57-37. The visitors forced 21 turnovers and pulled down 19 offensive rebounds but the Griz were four better, outscoring the Hornets 25-18 in second chance points.
Montana was just 5-of-15 from beyond the arc but shot 46.7% overall, scoring 48 points in the paint. Kayleigh Valley and Alycia Sims both had double-doubles for the Lady Griz, with Valley scoring 27 points and Sims totaling 16 rebounds. McCalle Feller had 22 points and eight rebounds as well as Montana avenged an 83-75 loss to the Hornets in The Nest in January.
The Hornets will play at Montana State at 1 p.m. Pacific time Saturday. The Bobcats, who beat Sacramento State 80-79 in Sacramento in January, stayed atop the Big Sky standings at 9-1 in league play with a win Thursday night over Portland State.
