Box Score FRESNO, Calif. — Fresno State, currently ranked 22nd in the nation, put up crooked numbers on the board in three different innings on the way to a 10-2 victory over Sacramento State in the fifth and final game of the Fresno State Softball Kick-Off on Sunday afternoon at Margie Wright Diamond.
The Hornets (2-7) conclude the three-day, five-game tournament with an 0-5 record, comprised of losses to UC Riverside and Fresno State on Friday followed by losses to Kansas and UC Riverside on Saturday. Perhaps most alarming is four of those losses came in eight-run mercy rule fashion. The only game the Hornets had an opportunity to win came in yesterday's 7-4 loss to UC Riverside in a game that was tied after six innings.
Sacramento State will attempt to regroup when it plays in a three-team tournament next weekend in Moraga. As part of the two-day, four-game tournament, the Hornets will play both Seattle and host Saint Mary's twice. This is all part of a stretch that will see Sacramento State play its first 13 games of the season away from home.
With today's victory, Fresno State improved its season record to a perfect 10-0.
The Bulldogs scored 10 runs on 12 hits off three Hornets pitchers, as Fresno State scored twice in the first inning, three times in the third, four runs in the fourth, and once more in the bottom of the fifth to enforce the mercy rule.
Sacramento State took its lone lead of the game in the top of the first inning when a Fresno State error allowed Natalie Alas to score. Alas connected on a one-out double and was pushed to third base on a Shelby Johnston single through the left side.
However, that lead was short lived as Fresno State would score nine unanswered runs until the Hornets pushed a run across in the top of the fifth inning on a two-out, RBI-single from Nikki Gialketsis which scored Alas.
Fresno State had three players finish with multi-hit games, including Alyssa Villalpando who went 3-for-3 with a run, walk and five RBIs. Lindsey Willmon finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored an an RBI.
Celina Matthias (2.2 ip), Taylor Tessier (0.2 ip) and Savanna Corr (1.1 ip) all made appearance in the circle with Matthias (1-3) getting the loss. Fresno Stat's Kamalani Dung (1-0) got the win, allowing five hits and two runs over 5.0 innings.
Sacramento State finished the game with five hits, including a 2-for-3 performance from Shelby Johnston. The Hornets' 5-9 hitters in the lineup combined to go just 1-for-9.
The Hornets begin next week's tournament in Moraga with a pair of games on Saturday against Saint Mary's at 10 a.m. and Seattle at 2 p.m.
