Box Score DAVIS, Calif. — Sacramento State used a five-run fifth inning, and got solid performances in the circle from Savanna Corr (5.0 ip) and Celina Matthias (2.0 ip) on the way to a 6-1 victory over Santa Clara on the final day of the Aggie Kick-Off Softball Tournament.
With the victory, the Hornets won their second straight game and finished the season-opening tournament with a 2-2 record. That includes a 5-3 win over Montana and one-run losses to CSU Bakersfield (5-4 in extra innings) and Santa Clara (1-0). Sacramento State also went seven scoreless innings against tournament host UC Davis on Friday night, but the game was halted prior to the eighth inning because of darkness and will be resumed at a later date.
The Hornets' pitching staff was solid throughout the tournament, compiling a 1.75 ERA over four games. The UC Davis game does not count statistically yet because it is not a completed game. However, if the game did count, the pitching staff ERA would be sitting at a minuscule 1.40. Right-handers Corr (1.40), Matthias (1.50) and Taylor Tessier (1.75), and left-hander Kaitlyn Yerby (2.17) all threw well during the tournament.
In today's win against Santa Clara, the Hornets never trailed, scoring once in the second inning and five times in the fifth to put the game away. The Broncos managed to push one run across in the fifth on starter Corr, who earned her first collegiate win while allowing four hits and one run over 5.0 innings. Matthias followed with two perfect innings of relief.
All six Hornet runs in today's game came after the second out had been recorded. That included the second inning when Zamari Hinton's RBI-single drove home Nikki Gialketsis. A Sydney Rasmussen double sent Gialketis to third before Hinton was able to drive her home.
In the fifth, after the first two outs of the inning were recorded, Sacramento State sent nine straight batters to the plate and five of them scored. The Hornets got plenty of help from Santa Clara, as the Hornets only had one hit in the frame, using two errors, four walks and a hit-bater to their advantage. In fact, Shelby Johnston scored the first run on an error, Alexxiss Diaz was hit by a pitch allowing Sasha Margulies to score, back-to-back bases loaded walks to Gialketsis and Rasmussen, and finally another Bronco error allowing Diaz to score.
Corr improved to 1-0 with the victory, allowing just four hits and one run with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Matthias needed just 19 pitches to set down six straight batters to close the game.
Hinton (2-for-4), Johnston (2-for-3 with walk and a run) and Margulies (2-for-4 with a run) all had multiple-hit games in the Hornets' nine-hit attack. Rasmussen, Diaz and Johnston have all hit safely in three straight games. Rasmussen, who is a true freshman, leads the team batting average (.375) and slugging percentage (.625) while also posting a .444 on-base percentage.
Sacramento State returns to action next week when the team competes at the three-day, five-game Fresno State Kickoff. The Hornets play twice on Friday and Saturday, and once more on Sunday. Sacramento State opens the tournament on Friday against UC Riverside at 1:30 p.m.
