WOMEN'S BASKETBALL LEADS WIRE-TO-WIRE IN 87-64 WIN OVER WEBER STATE

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State senior guard Adella Randle-El had a program record 10 steals along with 19 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists to lead the Hornets to an 87-64 win over Weber State on Thursday night in The Nest.

Sacramento State (8-14, 5-6 Big Sky) took the lead five seconds into the game and led the rest of the way, going up by as many as 23 points in the first half. The Hornets handed Weber State (15-7, 7-4 Big Sky) just its fourth conference loss and only its third road loss overall this season.

"We did a better job attacking than the first time we played them," Sacramento State head coach Bunky Harkleroad said. "We attacked with confidence and we knocked some shots down. We were active moving our feet and they struggled shooting the ball from the perimeter.

"We were aware of making shooters drive and Adella did a great job of getting her hands on some passes and coming up with loose balls. I didn't realize she had 10 steals until it was over but they were all important."

Randle-El topped the previous program record of eight steals and finished with the second most steals in a game in Big Sky history, just one steal shy of the conference record. She recorded her third double-double of the season in the process and did so with great accuracy, shooting 7-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line for her 19 points.

Junior Brianna Burgos scored 18 points in the first half and finished with a game-high 22 points, knocking down four 3-pointers and playing a career-high 37 minutes. Sophomore Maranne Johnson also hit four threes and had 18 points as the Hornets used their shortest bench of the season, with injuries playing a factor in just nine total players seeing action on Thursday rather than the usual 12-14.

Junior Kyhonta Doughty scored on a layup five seconds into the game as the Hornets opened with an 8-0 run and took a commanding 19-4 lead six and a half minutes in. Sacramento State led 22-9 at the end of the first quarter and saw its lead reach 38-15 at the 4:44 mark of the second quarter.

Weber State did end the first half on a 15-5 run to cut its deficit to 43-30 at the intermission. They extended to a 25-10 run to get within just seven points, 47-40, with 6:14 left in the third quarter, but the Hornets responded to bring their lead back to 14 points at the end of the quarter.

The Wildcats got no closer than a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter, with the Hornets holding the visitors scoreless over the last 3:38 of the game to end with a 10-0 run punctuated by Randle-El's 10th steal and a layup in the final seconds.

For just the third time this season Sacramento State had a higher field goal percentage than its opponent, shooting 47.8% overall, the teams best shooting percentage in Big Sky play this season, and holding the Wildcats to 41.7% shooting. The Hornets were 10-of-31 from 3-point range while Weber State was just 4-of-15.

Sacramento State also got to the free throw line 19 times, making 13, and forced 24 turnovers with just 15 of their own. Weber State did own a 41-33 rebounding edge and had four players score in double-figures led by 18 points and nine rebounds from Deeshyra Thomas.

The Hornets will look for another win and a season sweep of Idaho State at 2 p.m. Saturday in The Nest. The Bengals are 11-11 overall and 3-7 in Big Sky play after a 64-42 win at Portland State on Thursday.
